And Qantas appears to be doing just that with the appropriately named Qantas Cash card.
The unsolicited debit card mailout to up to 12 million frequent flyer program members - including a controversial opt-in feature for 16- to 18-year-olds - is now under the scrutiny of a Senate inquiry.

I knew about it and I haven't even read the T&C so it was obviously mentioned at least somewhere.

They don't hide this fee any more than they hide any of the other fees and charges.

If someone doesn't know about it it's because they were too lazy to find out, to be blunt.

I read the T&C and realised if my card never had money I never paid a fee.

At the moment I don't need the card and the process for depositing funds sucks so it's empty for now.

I picked this up very early in the piece. And it's not uncommon in the world of cash cards.

Seems fairly clear. Don't activate, don't get charged. Active and spend all your money (or only have less than $1 remaining), don't get charged.

They're not sending out "credit" cards, there's no credit to be had. I honestly don't see the issue.

it's in the pricing schedule, which is a small table that doesn't take more then 5 mins to read. and if you couldn't understand that, you probably shouldn't be using the card anyway.

anyway you get charged the $1 a month AFTER 12 months of inactivity. If you can afford to have money sitting in a card that you aren't using, you can afford the $1 a month.

Ever applied for a home loan, insurance (of any kind), bank account, credit card or even new frequent flyer programme membership? Prepared a will, filed a tax return, applied for Centrelink or health insurance benefits, applied for a visa?

You can't tell me you're being serious. And if you apply for all of those and don't read the fine print, then so help you God you furnish your own tomb...

You have to apply for (or at least manually activate) Qantas cash too - no one forces you to use it.

The article is being a bit melodramatic.

There is no inquiry currently being held by the senate on this matter, nor is there any proposed. However, the senate economics references committee is conducting an inquiry into the performance of ASIC. In light of media in the past few days, including articles referred to in my post 59 here, the inquiry (which will holds its first hearings next week) will likely see some questions put to ASIC on the topic.
