What a load of tripe that article is! The NBN offices are so crowded that I hardly think it is "splashing out" - in some cases there are up to 3 people sharing a single desk due to lack of space! And as far as travel goes, what do people really expect. It is the NATIONAL Broadband Network - not the "Frankston Local Broadband Network" where everyone could be housed in a small shed! And as far as people have said previously "why don't they use teleconferencing?" -well NBN does have a large number of teleconferencing facilities that are used to almost 100% capacity. So sometimes there is no option but travel. And most people will agree that there are sometimes things that can only be done face to face. One thing I can tell you is that the NBN travel policy is extremely strict and from the CEO down is a very strong mandate that it is taxpayers money and that it should only be spent where absolutely necessary for the delivery of the project.

As far as the preferred airline goes - I'm pretty sure that is an error. Virgin has been the airline for the last 2 years, but Qantas is definitely taking over on Oct 1. They must have be offering a massive discount, as the Virgin fares were SIGNIFICANTLY below the public price.

Oh, by the way, Virgin offered NBN staff free lounge membership as part of the deal over the last 2 years, so NBN has not spent a cent on lounge memberships despite what the article implies. I don't believe Qantas is offering the same (or at least it has not been announced).

Not all new accounts QF have got are at the expense of Virgin. I was told by someone who works in WA at the Cloudbreak (KFE) mine that the airline who previously had their business was Skywest.

Will be interesting to see how Skywest fairs with all the slowdown in mining.... They are one of the players that are heavily exposed.
