Qantas Wine latest offering

Just got off the phone with Qantas wine and bought 20 bottles of this sucker for $1900 for a total of 120,700 points (100,000 bonus QFF points + 5,700 as a Qantas Wine Premium members + 15,000 bonus point offer over the phone). With several classic award bookings coming up later this month and my program year just beginning the question remains, will I earn Points Club status this year?

Seeing at the program year just started for me I’m starting at 0 points for QFF Club. I’ve got 3 QF flights (SYD<>BNE red deal) I’m taking in the next week which gets me to 2,400 points there. Possible another 2,000 with Accor stays meaning the 120,700 won’t get me to Points Club by itself. Now there’s a couple of options here including Apple gift cards ($1000 is 10,000 points at certain Woolies retailers). Alternatively I could simply buy some more wine here.

Seems like you are spending significant money on things you may not really need. Wouldn't it be better to get a points earning credit card, aside from the sign-up bonus you earn easy points on money you were going to spend anyway.

Do I need the wine? Absolutely not! But in terms of purchasing points it is arguably the most affordable way, all things considered. And since there isn't a single credit card available to me in Australia which provides Qantas Points, this is arguably the cheapest option too. Keep in mind that I'm not planning on using these points to buy a toaster. At a minimum I'm looking to book at least three one-ways in coach with these points (2 pax on SYD > SCL, 1 pax on YVR > SCL). If you were to look for such flights online that would easily exceed the $1900 AUD I spent so far (even if you include the taxes n' fees portion of the redemption too).

I agree the wine can be good value but personally only buy near the end of the FF year to get my Green Tier tick and if I need to get those last few points, or it is a drop that I plan to drink.

Flight redemptions are excellent value provided they are available when you want/need. Although Y redemptions (coach is only a term used in North America) only occasionally better value than sale fares a few niche routes like Lord Howe or Broome excluded, generally J is the award sweet spot.

O/T but the entry level American Express is available to PR and long term visa holders. And of course many overseas issued cards can convert to QF points as well.

I would make the argument that the best time to buy these points would be at the beginning of the program year. In that way you would enjoy all of the benefits of points club for most of the current program year and the following program year. For me the big deal with points club would be the accrual of status credits on Qantas classic awards, which when combined with the Platinum perk of being able to release classic award seats is quite appealing indeed. It's also not bad to receive such status credits on Qantas operated BA Avios issued tickets, either given the many sweet spots they have.

Given the itinerary I've got planned, any savings would be welcomed. To give you an example, I see the cheapest logical fare (that is a fare that doesn't involve me crossing through LAX and MIA) from SYD to SCL is $1,577 on LA (transiting in AKL) booked as a one-way. Two of those tickets would cost me $3,144. The cheapest nonstop from YVR to SYD is $1,754 on QF when I'm looking to fly. So a total of $4898. Now, yes you can point out that booking a return is cheaper (I did the homework there and that works out to $2800 AUD return, but even then I'm still ahead. Is the cost savings and value per point booking economy as great as business class, I think everyone here could unequivocally agree no but monetarily but also in terms of experience. Perhaps if I was travelling alone and had a simpler itinerary, I would consider booking such a ticket in a heartbeat. But this itinerary just ain't it.

I should also point out that classic award tickets have a few benefits including changes and refunds for very little cost (i.e. 5K-6K points per pax) plus instant upgrade eligibility. The latter could prove to be important as I generate QF points by other means. For instance, I could book a QF economy award, then once I have enough points call up QF and get it switched to a Premium Economy or Business award.

The issue is I'm on a student visa so I cannot apply for a credit card here. To say it was frustrating when I got here and called the AmEx global transfer line to be told this fact is the understatement of the decade for me.

Well I am already PC, so no need to hurry to requalify just need to get to 150k PC points by the end of the FF year. I track progress monthly to see if Im on track.

Agree this is the only reason I bother with PC to be honest, as being WP (and SG before that) lounge passes are not needed.

Anyway to bring this back on track I'm on the look out for a nice, preferably single bottle of sustainable Rose (so can get 2 green leafs - one for the sustainable wine and one for climate positive delivery) whilst utilising my PC voucher, and any bonus points would be well a bonus.

Last year I got 1 sustainable and 1 non sustainable for about $10 out of pocket after the voucher was applied.

@kangarooflyer88 not sure of your circumstances but in Victoria until early January Red Energy have a double points sign up bonus for electricity and gas = 30,000 points ( 20k for electricity and 10k for gas). Should credit in 40 days after connection and first bill paid.

This is a great deal, I only got 15k (10k for electricity and 5k for gas). Noting that the electricty arrived within 40 days, but the gas took almost 4 months as there can not be a meter reading during the cooling off period.

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it) I don't pay for utilities where I live - that's included in the rent I pay. And I don't drive a car (since it is effectively illegal in this country to own a car) and already have University provided health insurance. So the options I have for churning points is somewhat limited in that regard.

Hopefully not a silly question but thought I’d ask: when do the Qantas wine points land in your frequent flyer account? When the wine ships? When it is delivered? Or even later? The reason I ask is checking my QFF account I see the 15,000 bonus point offer I received from buying my wine over the phone posted yesterday (which was also when the wine was shipped) but the 105K points from the order itself hasn’t (I was advised over the phone that the phone bonus and the primary wine bonus points would post as two separate transactions)

They normally post within days IME. But there could be a batching process that could see that vary by a few days.

My order last Tue saw points land on Friday. The wine arrived yesterday (but was meant to arrive Thu/Fri. It spent the w/e at Kemps Creek (just next to Schitts).

Update: Checked my QFF account today (Wednesday) and the points for the ordered I placed last week (Friday) have posted.

One other data point that I think is worth noting is that in general it's always better to order the points erm I mean wine over the phone than online since the agents have the latitude to provide additional bonus points on top of what QF Wine offers. Additionally, the agents have some flexibility in the size of the "phone" bonus points they offer you. When I ordered the 20 bottles of wine over the phone I was offered 10,000 bonus points. I pushed back and asked if they could do a little better. They said they would speak to their manager and get back to me. Sure enough they came back with 15,000 point offer which I grudgingly accepted.
