From news.com.au:

QANTAS chief Alan Joyce has warned discount air fares will end unless the nation's airports trim costs and stop charging for everything imaginable.

Mr Joyce said Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane ranked in the top five airports in the world as measured by operating margins.

Had a nice belly laugh when I saw this one. It comes around every 6 months or so.

Maybe if Macquarie charged them more for those gates with "extra leg room" for the those planes that want an extra bit of comfort. It really is the pot calling the kettle black.

I agree it looks that way on the surface. However, it is a true fact that the airlines (and not just Qantas) have offered much lower airfares in recent times to try to stimulate demand. So in many cases passengers choosing to pay for optional services such as exit row seating are still paying less than would have been paid for the same ticket 12 months ago.

I can understand that the airlines feel they are generating the demand by reducing their margins and the airports are benefits and making strong profits from the airline-generated and funded demand.
