Qantas wants to codeshare on Garuda Indonesia's flights to/from Australia

This recently caught my attention:

The International Air Services Commission (the Commission) has received an application

In summary, Qantas has applied to codeshare with Garuda Indonesia on routes between Australia and Indonesia.

Given the Qantas Group and Garuda currently control the vast majority of capacity between Australia and DPS/CGK I can't see the government approving this. Unsurprisingly, VA and the former IASC commissioner have also opposed it.

Qantas had a thing going with Garuda back in the early ‘90s.

The first time (and last time for 30 years) I flew to Bali, I booked a QF ticket that was Garuda up (day flight on near empty B767?) and QF B747 back.

Although they weren't codeshares as I recall.

Slimming the details, there might be one extra day flight in there?

Why would VA be against this though? Less competition for any flights to Bali for them.

Allow them to codeshare, unrestricted, to any ports in Indonesia other than Bali and Jakarta. There you go problem solved.

The request seems to be to allow Garuda to.put it's code on Qantas flights, but not the other way around

Why would VA be against this though? Less competition for any flights to Bali for them.

Do you mean Qantas keeps cancelling flights to Jakarta or Jetstar cancelling flights to Bali?

I know Jetstar often cancells flight to bali, but they are not Qantas.

Probably no point spending time and resources pursuing this further when there is almost no chance they would be successful.

I’m surprised they ever even tried in the first place.
