Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Back on July 1st managed to get my family of 4 upgraded from economy to business on QF25 SYD - HND. Was not expecting it at all! I requested it from my bronze account, but my wife is gold. Worked out well because we were travelling from Melbourne via Sydney and it was the same day as Sydney "Bomb Cyclone" or whatever the media were calling it. Had our Melbourne to Sydney flight cancelled a few times and then we were on our way we ended up circling for over an hour. When we got to the international side of SYD boarding had already started. Once on the plane we had an hour delay (probably getting our bags across in the weather) but that was ok in the business class seats, felt sorry for the other PAX from MEL stuck in economy after that 2.5hr bumpy ride. On the plus side, didn’t realise if your connecting flight is business you could get into the domestic business lounge, made up for missing the international lounge in SYD.

QF42 CGK-SYD SG+bronze. Declined at T9.

Was showing J6 until they switched and put a 26seat 332 and then it shrunk to zero. Bit of a surprise as the first three rows of whY was showing empty on EF leading up to the flight.

T-59.5 (success) 2x PE to J QF103 SYD-HNL (overnight flight).

Separate bookings but both WP (plus I did call to "link"). I requested the upgrade about 1 min before SYD+1, which could have been awkward if only one came through! But fortunately I could see it was a fairly lite load on the EF seatmap (well, at least until EF completely coughped itself). Plus, up until a week or so ago, there were 2x CR U seats available!

Anyway, texts arrived a few seconds apart.

T-27 and a bit success on QF35 tomorrow (25/7) for 2 Pax from Y Saver.
This one is a bit of extra value for me. These were one way outbounds for what was meant to be an F on Emirates back to MEL for the wife's birthday. Needless to say that's all changed.
Was a bit pensive might not get them. Was clocking in at J4 availability at 8am: and I rarely see J quiet on QF35.

Further to this, there were 18 vacant seats in J at after we were upgraded. By T-24, there was ~2, and PE went from mostly full to mostly empty!

Oooooph. Demand falling off a cliff?

2 x QF46 DPS-MEL on July 25 from Y to J declined as P1 at T-5
This was expected, both business and economy were 100% full from a week before the flight.
Used to get upgrades on the Bali flights quite easily when it was daily out of Melbourne but no dice the last couple of times.
