Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

I've requested an upgrade MEL-SYD for a family member for tomorrow, but with <24h to go on EF it sort of looks like no upgrades have been processed for Saturday. Any bets on if/when these would come through? I'm guessing it's due to the long weekend.

What status does your family member hold, and how many J seats available for sale on the flight?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has insight into upgrades on QF11 (SYD–LAX) on 23 June 2025. I’m currently booked in Business and noticed there are 4 seats showing as available in First, and 3 appear to be blocked.

Cheers,

Welcome to AFF.

ExpertFlyer is showing F4A0 so there is just 4 seats available. Do you hold status?

Wondering what my best option is for an upgrade.
QF1 in a couple of weeks. (27/06)
Status: Platinum
Current booking: economy (L)
Desired upgrade: Premium economy.

I've currently spent all my points elsewhere so only have about 20k in surplus.
I have put in an upgrade bid for about $1.6k.

However I do know that classic reward upgrades get prioritsed before cash bids. So am wondering if a better option would be to buy top-up FF points, and try that way, rather than the bid system?(however this will mean if unsuccessful I've dropped $2k on points I don't really need)

Looks like there is still a lot of W seats available at this stage (I think).

Would welcome opinions on what to do from seasoned upgraders!

Can you buy some wine to get enough points? Probably cheaper than from them direct.

The cash bids are done after points upgrades, they're pretty uncommon afaik.

SYD-LHR, SYD-SIN, or SIN-LHR?

Your cash bid will almost certainly be unsuccessful as all classic upgrades are processed first, like you've mentioned. On top of that European summer is one least likely times to get an upgrade on QF1/2, although your Platinum status is going to help a lot if you can find enough points to submit a classic upgrade request.

If you are prepared to fork out $1600, you might consider calling a Qantas Wine advisor and negotiating a deal for 2 or 3 cases of Cape Barren Shiraz for $1200/1800. You should be able to get 10-20k extra points* for a first order of this size with Qantas Wine, in addition to the 60k/90k bonus points. The points arrive in 2-3 days of ordering.

You then have 20k (existing) + 60/90k (public bonus) + 10-20k (first order bonus) = somewhere between 90k and 130k points. Classic upgrade rates are below, you may even have enough to apply for a J upgrade.

SYD-SIN: 34,100 (W), 54,500 (J)
SIN-LHR: 47,600 (W), 76,300 (J)
SYD-LHR: 81,700 (W), 130,800 (J)

Worst case scenario your upgrade is unsuccessful, you have plenty of wine to help forget the horrors of long-haul economy, and a decent stash of points for your next trip.

Another option is to ask family members if they can lend you points? If your upgrade is successful then buy the wine to repay the points, if unsuccessful just transfer back to the family member.

*Just ask if there are any promotions available for new customers and/or large orders. In May they were running the following promo

spend $2,000 or more on wine in one transaction at Qantas Wine via the Wine Advisor service, and receive a bonus of 30,000 Qantas Points, on top of the standard points per dollar and any bonus points earned. Plus for every additional $1,000 spent in the same transaction you will earn another 15,000 Qantas Points (up to a maximum of 90,000 points)^.

Adding to the wisely suggested wine options above, is that if you happen to be a PC+ member, you'll also get 10% off those wines, and may have a voucher that can be applied to the transaction, as well. Adding those could get you down as low as $490 for each case of the Cape Barren Shiraz w/30K bonus points

A bulk wine purchase is actually a cracking idea I hadn't thought of!

Are you suggesting the Cape Baron for the additional 30k bonus points its currently offering, or the fact its a decent drop at good value, or both?

Im ideally trying to upgrade the whole journey: SYD->LHR.

(I'm only PC not PC+)
