Qantas Ultimate Amex: 30K bonus points + $200 off annual fee 1st year

Think it has slightly more value than that given to get the QF flight you need only buy something in the Qantas shop and this you can do for under $10.

So the value equation would be $257.50 (just choosing a random product) buys a return economy flight plus 30K points.
Qantas shop does not accept amex :)

So if one values QFF points at ~2.5c each then the value of QFF points that comes with this offer is more than worth the $250 annual fee for the first year. It is a shame I already have the Qantas Amex Premium card.

Firstly Hummel it is ok to be a little aggressive when it comes to making points to travel. So this is within the accepted range of normal on this AFF site of 25,000 members.
For some people it is best not be too aggressive in accumulating points as one may end up with way too many points and no time to use them plus one needs to wary about further devaluation of FF programs.

I have close to 500,000 QFF points but I cannot see the value in spending 120,000 QFF points + taxes and surcharge on a SYD-BKK return n business when a Oneworld award requires ~143,500 QFF points + taxes and surcharges. The problem though is that I do not have the time for a Oneworld award (need 3-4 weeks away) and my QFF points balance is growing by the day to the point where I am concerned about further "enhancements" to the QFF program.

I have given my family the log in data for my 3 travel points sites so if I haven't used every last point before I am about to leave this world they can go mad doing some bookings.John you may wish to look at the globe and pick a few new destinations. We always used to travel for less than 2 weeks so going in J or First pretty much helps you keep going if your flight takes 24 hours.I would often do a five day long haul and tack a side trip to my work travel for a few days.Points are for burning rather than hoarding. It is a game to redeem those points for high retail values. Have you tried long weekends playing golf all around Australia ? What about London,Rome,New York or somewhere exotic?

Time is against me while I am working.

I agree.

It also depends on what one values the product.

Some may choose to redeem 192,000 QFF points for a SYD-LAX return in business class and I guess the airfare is worth ~$10,000 retail but I would not put anywhere near that much value on it. I would rather spend 96,000 QFF points for a SYD-LAX return in economy or even better still 143,500 QFF points for a Oneworld award and see a lot more destinations.

I have just about played golf everywhere in Australia. Domestic redemptions are poor value though in my opinion.

What about London,Rome,New York or somewhere exotic?
I think you are right and it is time to start planning the next Oneworld award and use up as many of the 16 sectors as possible.

I've just received my new Qantas Ultimate Amex, quite happy because I was offered 40,000 QFF bonus points in a targeted letter from Qantas :)

Just a question for the others that have this card - what would the most cost effective way to get the bonus points awarded upon making a purchase of Qantas products and services? I had an idea that I could purchase some QFF points (perhaps 500 points for $20), but I'm not sure if this counts for the bonus.

Any ideas? I'm not really excited by the idea of spending $5.95 + $13.54 shipping for a Qantas key ring :(

You can always give me the points so you don't have to worry about possible "enhancements" to QFF program! ;)

Sure, add your name to the list and I will distribute the points evenly.

Ah,an uncapped Amex card......now this one is my favourite and I joined with no bonus and nothing off. I did receive a gushing thank you letter but no champagne and no chocolates. Despite that and the fact that you can not put the card into credit then these are the only downsides to using this one.Let's say you have a bill that is almost double your credit limit, you can pay half on Monday then pay down your card to zero on Thursday and immediately pay the second part of that account.Or if the bill is bigger than that you start paying earlier and repeat the process every 3 clear business days.

Welcome to AFF :D

Myabe you could do a classic or (discounted) ASA and pay the "Taxes" part with it. OF course, that would be a direct devaluation of the bonus points.

Another way would be to simply purchase a ticket, cheapest red e-deal you can find.

Thanks! Long time lurker, first time poster ;)

Hmm, seems like they are the only options, will probably have to wait until I book another flight... oh well. Not sure if I have to make the Qantas purchase within the year to get the bonus, but we will see.

When will this offer expire?

I'm currently working a casual job but will start a full time job in the first week of August. Wondering if I will get rejected for being casual??? (even though I clear $5K a week)

If you already have the premium or discovery card, you can cancel it, and apply for the ultimate, and still get the bonus points. There's no waiting period.

I had the discovery, canceled it, and applied for the premium card next day.

Great news. I've just paid the balance to zero on my Discovery so will cancel this week.

Just saw this..
I had a Qantas American Express Premium card some time ago, but this was cancelled about 4 years ago (after I got the bonus points which were offered on signup for that card at the time).

Would that count me out of this promotion?

So to get the "free" domestic flight you have to book a flight with Qantas first... so I could book a SYD-MEL flight for ~$190 return (on sale), then redeem the "free" flight SYD-ADL return (retail value ~$260), and be in front considering the $250 annual fee (first year only).

Then cancel the card when it is up for renewal and pocket the bonus points. Hmmm. Sounds very good to me.
