Or an innovative aero bridge solution for the rear doors instead of making people schlep it down stairs, across the tarmac and back up again

It would be quite an engineering feet. Aircraft have stop positions to more or less put the front door in the right place. Given various aircraft sizes, the back door is going to be all over the place!
