Qantas Travel Insurance - so uncompetitive

When I'm looking for travel insurance, I usually get a quote from Qantas Travel Insurance. I figure that if the price is reasonable, I might as well earn a few Qantas points. But every time I get a quote, it's way higher than pretty much every other travel insurance provider. Like, often double the quotes I'm getting from other insurers for a comparable single-trip policy.

Am I missing something or is Qantas Travel Insurance just really uncompetitive when it comes to price?

That’s exactly my experience. I always get a quote on the off chance, but it’s never even close to competitive.

I can't say that I associate anything with a Qantas brand on it as being price competitive.

What you'll find with all these products is you are buying points at a minimum of 0.5-1c/pt.

For example, the home insurance product is just a white label product from Auto & General. Put in the identical details with another of their brands, such as Budget Direct, and you'll get the exact same product and the price difference will be equivalent to buying points at about 0.5c/pt rate (last time I checked — may have gone up).

It's even worse with some products, as you've found.

As mentioned on another thread, we “renewed”* the QF annual multi-trip again. It was actually cheaper than last year, and one of the few that did 45d trips.

Agree, the single trip price (not just QF) are huge and make a multi-trip a no brainer if travelling regularly.

Quite some time ago, there used to 20% to 30% off discounts with eDine and some of my Professional membership benefits programs.

*technically, it’s not a renewal, just take out another policy to provide contiguous cover.

Interesting! QF for an annual multi-trip came in at $688. The cheapest was AHM at $627. So very competitively priced for annual!

I just use the "free" Covermore travel insurance from my CBA Diamond Awards Mastercard.

Depends on your circumstances, I used a comparator website and QF was the cheapest for me. (It’s just NIB rebranded so not a huge surprise, they’re one of the main players).

Travel insurance is more expensive but I factored in the value of the bonus points and I came out ahead. I’ve noticed most insurers have significantly increased in the last 12 months.

The ability to get points refund would be very useful if that ever occurred, as I’m sure you’d get cheaped out by a third party insurer.

Just booked Qantas Travel Insurance for a trip to Eastern Africa and they were very competitive

IME Qantas travel Insurance for TransTasman trip is often one of (if not the) the cheapest; and so I often use them for those NZ long weekends. They were also competitive for my South Korea trip earlier this year; just not once you add in Latin America, USA or Europe then there are better options.

Noting I am of working age with no pre-existing conditions .

Just checking for a NZ trip for Mrs NM early 2026, and Qantas was cheaper than most other insurers I checked, by 1.5% to 16.9%. However, the flexibility to customise benefits/cover amounts to meet the needs of this specific trip resulted in my Home/Contents/Car insurance provider coming in about 12% cheaper than Qantas. For example, my current Home/Contents/Car insurance provider offers three levels of cover (Premium, Standard, and Saver), with the Standard allowing nomination of "Cancellation Limit". I could drop the default Cancellation Limit from $10,000 down to $2,500 to reduce the premium cost, making this a viable option for this trip where cancellation would not have a major financial impact and $2,500 is adequate cover for that category.

Qantas travel insurance (and most others) only allowed selection Single Trip (Comprehensive cover) or Annual Milti-Trip (Comprehensive cover) and then some optional add-ons. Some offered the ability to vary the default excess (normally $250).

Caveat emptor or DYOR, for car insurance I found them very good when I had to claim, while for travel I usually get a cover more annual but always check. It’s well known than when it comes to insurance loyalty doesn’t pay!

wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a checkbox for each category in the policy, then I could deselect rental car cover for trips where I am not renting a car (as an example). Taylor the cover to match the risk/trip.

Just to add, right now i'm donig some quoting and it seems like QF is a fair bit more expensive - BUT at the same time it's earning some QFF points (albeit at about 4c per point cost) AND 20 SC.

For a one off, may be a reasonable tradeoff.

Well, at least you could do it swiftly.

As for me, I'll stick to the complementary CBA travel insurance, as it save me thousands over paid insurance. Anyone over 75 would know what I'm talking about.
