Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

Looks fun, although my next F lounge visit isn't until July, so I'll miss the trial period :(.

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

If you're adding new technology to the planes I'd rather have wi-fi to be honest

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

I can see this kind of stuff being very big in the next five years. The Samsung Gear is a 'lite' version of the Oculus Rift, which is probably around 6 months away from a consumer release. Oculus were bought by Facebook for USD $2bn last year, so they're well capitalised.I've been beta-testing the headset for a friend who develops 3D visualisations, and the 2nd or 3rd iteration is going to be stunning. Currently it's quite bulky / heavy and the resolution is low (1080P per eye), so you can still make out some pixellation. But the mature technology will make the viewer feel like they're sitting in a private movie theatre with a huge screen and surround sound, which would be great on a LAX flight.

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

Great product to be offering but Wi fi in flight would be so much better...

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

Cool! Maybe some day we will have live feed from the coughpit at takeoff/landing with these 3D headsets!

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

“Whether the user wants a virtual tour of our new Los Angeles First Lounge or experience an A380 landing from the tarmac, this technology gives us a completely new way to connect with our customers,” said Mrs Wirth.

The latter sounds awesome.

Guess I'll see it in the F lounge soon. I imagine it will be very popular and wonder if F pax can reserve their chance to use it in the lounge when they discuss their spa appointment?

Oh and have no interest in in-flight wif fi.

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

This sounds very good, hope it takes off (and wi-fi holds only novelty interest for me on planes - I made a few posts during the TPAC trial a few years ago but quickly got bored with it).

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

They should trial it in the J lounge, so that pax can pretend they're actually in the F lounge! :)

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

I am flying F to London in April but saw that this will be on the LA flights only :(

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

Well I reckon that they should give them to whY pax instead, F pax should be enjoying the spacious seat and cabin, if they gave them to whY pax, the could sit in virtual F class!

Think of the yield management discussions; the whole plane is now F!!! :)

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

Yeah inflight wifi is gotta be on the list.

And not $50 for 10MB, which is gone as soon as your iPhone connects and starts refreshing notifications and email. Isn't this why all the 380 seats have ethernet jacks in them?

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

Fun for 5 minutes unless you're a gamer. Longer term use will rely on the development of interesting content and a lighter form factor.

But only reasonably priced wifi would catch my attention, ie influence who I might fly with.

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

Looks cool, seeing as I'm not going to get to the LAX lounge anytime soon! Also doing the bridge climb without leaving the lounge!

Guess I'll have to plan an F lounge run on everyone's favourite LCC :p

Re: Qantas x Samsung Gear VR

Sounds fun - we will be flying back from LAX in F in May so hope we experience it - well Mr FM will probably be more interested than me, but it would be fun to try. Mr FM loves gadgets - Master FM gave him a Google watch for Christmas and he has been driving me bonkers with it. :)
