about time. i hate going via PER to get to KGI when travelling from MEL!!! Heading there in december for christmas..
 
it's 120 SC travelling in J at the moment, going MEL-PER-KGI. I just looked up MEL-ADL-KGI and it wouldn't work but at a guess it would be around 100 SC, being 40 MEL - ADL and 60 ADL - KGI (based on 1030 miles).

In Y those numbers are 60 and 50 so really not a huge difference.

I've travelled it quite a few times and I hate getting stuck at PER. so for 10 less SC, it can be worth it in time.

Pros for via ADL:

  • Shorter flight time (in total). Excellent for ADL flyers (except those chasing status).
  • Slightly cheaper (I think if I did the mental math). e.g. BNE/ADL/KGI < BNE/PER/KGI, where you could substitute BNE for SYD, MEL, CBR and probably still be on the money.
  • Larger, slightly nicer QP at ADL (not sure how bad it could get, considering that there is SA mining company pax and ADL Intl pax. PER has a nice view, however.)
  • ADL is a nicer airport than PER...hands down.
  • Easier to get out of ADL during a delay compared to getting stuck in PER.
  • More flights to ADL than to PER (i.e. from BNE, SYD, CBR, MEL...).
  • Flight times to/from ADL easily more sane than PER.
Cons for via ADL:

  • Less SC and points than via PER.
  • Less regular services on ADL/KGI compared to PER/KGI.
  • Major mining headquarters contingents are in PER, not ADL.
  • PER/KGI uses 738s with J; ADL/KGI use 717s with no J.
  • Longer flight on to/from KGI sector (~1 hour PER/KGI compared with ~2 hour for ADL/KGI)
 
I know that QF aren't a fan of multistop flights but PER-KGI-ADL (and opposite) on Friday evenings and Monday mornings would certainly appeal to the business flyers....... at least to and from KGI
