In light of the part purchase of Air NZ by Qantas, which I am sure has annoyed Singapore Airlines, I read in the Singapore press that Singapore Airlines may buy British Airway's share in Qantas.

It is all getting a bit incestious... but it is well known that British Airways needs cash, and it could be likely that Singapore Airlines may by their share, to stunt Qantas' power and growth in the region.

What will this mean for Qantas...?? Could they be forced out of One World to join Star Alliance...

Anyone heard this rumour?

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Singapore airlines are notorious for lying - lying about safety, lying after fatals, lying about their plans. It is the nature of the beast.

QFs buy-up of NZ, assuming it isn't blocked by Comrade General Secretary Fells or his red buddies across the Tasman, will more likely mean that NZ joins OneWorld. The impending collapse of UA is a hell of a blow to the * Alliance, and OneWorld stands to reap all the benefits, particularly with QF to be operating out of ORD in the future.

QF is WELL established in OneWorld, and the QF/ BA partnership on the Roo Route and the resulting feeds is way to profitable for either party to consider dumping. Singapore is hurting here as a result of the Ansett collapse and the resulting loss of feed, they will hurt even more once NZ gets under QF's thumb, and still more once UA goes under.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of shonks.

Qantas join Star Alliance - doubt it!!

I agree with Shillard, why the hell would Qantas want to join Star Alliance - oneworld is much better.

With United looking like backing into Chapter 11 Bankruptcy this weekend, Star Alliance then becomes impotent in the USA. They have then lost 2 continents carriers - are they starting to fall apart?

Bring Air NZ into oneworld - why not - they are probably looking to have an exit strategy if Star Alliance falls apart. They know they can't go it alone.

Singapore don't have the funds to buy 25% of anything at the moment and from a market capitalisation, Qantas is bigger than British Airways.
