Yes. If the 747 is doing Mel-Hkg from Fri-Sun, then I suspect that A330 will do SYD-HKG on those days for a dbl daily service.

Fair increase I'm hkg capacity.
Not to mention that the days 117/118 don't operate currently just happen to be the days that 29/30 is going to 747

I guess AFF's have solved it! Makes sense if you take everything into consideration, doesn't seem like a coincidence either. Though why didn't QF just make the announcement from the beginning? Instead, they said that they are going to allocate the plane to another Asian market.

It looks as though from next Friday 11 December, QF117 / QF118 will operate on Fridays too.
This just leaves Saturday and Sunday for QANTAS to find slots for in busy HKG airport to make SYD-HKG double daily.

Actually I guess we were all wrong with QF set to announce MEL-SIN going x10 weekly, with a new QF37/38 afternoon service departing at 16:05 arriving in SIN at 22:15, the return QF38 service departs SIN at 23:35, arriving back to MEL at 09:00. :)

When does it start? That means between QF, SQ, JQ, EK and Scoot some days there will be what 9 direct flights a day?! I didn't think SIN was that popular a destination anymore given its really expensive, not well connected to the Americas and not that fun?

I think you will find most people connect through SIN to onwards destinations, QF also has a large number of airlines codeshares on its flights.

SQ are also looking at a 5th service as well. Apart from significant amount of connecting leisure and business traffic, SIN also is a significant business destination. Also you're taking a very Australian centric view of the world - the flights aren't just about taking Aussies to holidays in SIN, MEL is also a very popular leisure , business and student destination for Singaporeans and others in the region.

Are any additional flights being scheduled to Jakarta from any east coast location? FA's suggested a new flight was on the way.

Didn't see that coming :)

Well said.

With Thousands of overseas University Students in MEL from SIN & nearby countries, flights between the two nations are in hot demand.

QF38 departs SIN at 00:25 and arrives into MEL at 11:05 :p

I'm not seeing those times loaded in, so that's strange.

Definitely agree, traffic between MEL and SIN is not just one-way, demand is very strong both ways. MEL, was always popular amongst Singaporeans, many fly to Melbourne for short trips, 2-3 nights as an example, a few times a year. They love the general atmosphere of Melbourne and some have that emotional attachment when they were students studying and living in Melbourne and come back as often as they can, not to mention the amount of business links between the 2 cities, play an important role too. But this is just 1 component of the market. :)

I just remembered what is also interesting is not only this increase in frequency but looking at the EK/QF alliance as a whole EK is also ncreasing capacity on the route early next year by switching to A380. Although not sure how much that is related to adding DXB-MEL vs SIN-MEL capacity

Would be interesting a comparison pre and post QF-switch to DXB the capacity across EK and QF to/from SIN (obviously clouded by the "beyond" capacity vs local demand).

Was looking at my flight for next month so I'm probably looking at the summer schedule.
That looks to be a one-off special for the Xmas/NY period. The regular QF38 doesn't start until later in the year.

And hopefully it's not a MH metal!
