Qantas to cut service in the air

QANTAS will cut the number of cabin crew on its flagship A380 aircraft despite unions raising fears about an ''inferior service'' due to a heavier workload for staff.
The airline plans to reduce flight attendants on the aircraft from 22 to 21 late next month; it has cut cabin crew levels on its A330-300 planes from 10 to nine.

Meh 1.... Hardly a deal breaker.

J on the A380 is def over staffed IMHO... I get a different person serving me every 5 mins.

From today's announcements cuts are also being made on the ground!

The interesting comparator stat was the SQ staff their A380 with 23 cabin crew.

Its respun old news and affects all australian airlines, effectively CASA have decided to adopt the 1:50 ratio for crew versus pax thats used internationally rather than the unique Australian 1:36 that we have had in the past, Ozbeachbabe first gave us the heads up some time ago.

This reduction has nothing to do with the 1:50 ratio as that will only apply for aircraft that carry less than 216 passengers.

Certainly not overstaffed at all. They reduce our crew numbers but don't change the service to accommodate the extra work load. Then passengers complain we take to long to do the service.

They did a trial a few months ago with 1 less crew member in J and it didn't work very well. The also did a trail on single cart operation in economy, which also didn't work very well. My understanding is that the cabin that will lose the crew member will be economy.

SQ 471 Pax, 23 crew
QF 450 Pax, 22 going to 21.

Emirates have anywhere from 24 to 26 crew depending on the route.

Can you tell us how many staff are in each cabin?

Do any staff crossover between cabins?

And I see they have 489 seats, more than SQ, so more staff required?

I stand corrected, I overlooked CASR 128 had the 216 pax limit, it is fresh after all ! Thanks for the correction.

F = 3
J = 8 - the CSM is not included in that number but they are part of some of the service
W = 2
Y = 8 including the CSS

Unlike on the 747 crew do not have to change cabins during the service. Of course if one cabin finishes before another assistance is offered to help finish.

It’s hard to choose where service should be removed then, but J seems like a better bet than Y considering the amount of pax.
