Qantas to change credit card surcharge from flat fee to percentage

This is the attitude which keeps surcharges alive and well ;) Sure it's not much extra and you'll find almost everyone here agrees - including myself.

However, by not disengaging with the taxed-channel you are effectively supporting the stats which prove it's an accepted practise.

QF are likely in a precarious position where they can't build in the cost into select booking classes, only charge non-QF earning credit cards the fee, or non-status members etc because of the highly restrictive laws in Australia. Which makes it a case of charge or not charge additional fees related to payment. What Qantas could do however - is help members offset the fee through genuinely value-added services. "Not a member of QFF? Join now (check this box) and we'll give you a $10 flight credit instantly" or "Want $25 instantly off your flight? Check this box and we'll apply for a xx_ on your behalf".

There are no shortage of highly personalised offers which could be displayed given the circumstances where the user is making the flight booking.
This article I published a while back highlights additional opportunities QF could cash in on: http://bit.ly/1rg4F28

Their competitors are doing it and making a fortune, yet Qantas is obsessed with card additional fees which degrade the product experience.

I agree with you. It's unfortunate that Qantas seems to have taken quite a different approach to getting people to join QFF. Instead of offering a $10 discount, they want to charge $89.50! Then, when they run promotions offering free membership, they make it sound like they're doing the customer a favour.

Compare this to Virgin Australia. I recall an offer of 500 bonus points when joining Velocity while booking a flight, after I didn't enter a FF number.

Now to really put up your blood pressure....

Remember that while WoW was giving out QFF points for spending over $30 you could join QFF for free via a link from WoW?

At the same time, if you dealt direct Q was charging you to join QFF.

Seems Q's senior (senile) management are strong believers in "Caveat Emptor" or is it "There's a sucker born every minute"?

I booked tonight and used Amex. Fee was flat $30

Me, booked AUG/16 for 2017 J BNE>MEL>SIN>HKG>SIN>BNE used Amex flat fee AU$30 on a $4000.00 fare.

How much would the CC charge be after Sept 2016??

cheers

The surcharge is 1.3% so you would pay a surcharge of $52 on a $4,000 international airfare.

QF appears to be applying the CC surcharge to the fines on award fares.

Tonight I booked an award fare with $49 in fines, plus a revenue fare of $325 on the same PNR.

I expected to pay 1.3% on $325 but it was calculated on the total amount of $374.

That hasn't been my experience (unless they recently changed something)... I wonder if it's due to being a combined paid/award booking?

Where is your booking originating from?

I see this on the final booking page "No Fees Apply" for Credit Cards: http://puu.sh/sfKYH/5c89f8f747.png
its DRW-BNE-DRW. Simple enough I would have thought.

That was what I figured.

The fines were only $60 or so and therefore the difference in CC surcharge was less than one dollar, so it's no big deal. But I was just letting people know in case the have a OW Awward where the fines can be $1k or more.
