I was thinking of booking a cheap flight to SIN or BKK, have a mini stay and then book a flight to Europe.

have just done a lot of research planning such a trip. I booked Y economy reurn tickets with Royal Brunei at their sale price as I prefer seating and service and IFE to that of Jetstar. Sale price $634.
I wanted to treat myself to a business class experience for once in my travelling life.
Using the airline booking sites directly I had a great deal of trouble deciding between Oman Air and Qatar airlines. In the end I chose Oman as I could get a seat next to window and it was fully flat on all 4 sectors and I could get limo to BKK and to CDG. I could get train fare from FRA to Dusseldorf . I have flown Qatar and found them to be excellent but felt I could not be guaaranted the choice of a window seat as 3 of four sectors had 2 seats next to windows. Mind you the Qatar person I spoke to in Melbourne said to book it and then contact them about seating and when I checked the Flight Availability | Upgrades | Frequent Flyer Information site I could see that their loading from BKK would probably guarantee me an empty seat beside me .... it was the promise of limos that proved to be irresistible.

Made 2 mistakes, whilst booking I was waiting for a box to tick to say I wanted to use DB from Frankfurt airport and I was expecting to be able to access limo at some stage. NOW I have learnt. there is a special web page telling you exactly how to incorporate train booking in your business class flight by pulling down a special drop down menu for departure or arrival point. When I rang Muscat to ask about limo I was told this service is only available to J class passengers who have C or G tickets and my ticket was D which was all the web page I was using showed.
There was little difference in pricing AUD 2951 on Oman and AUD 2938 on Qatar (Z) ..not sure what that means. Qatar has a fantastic Premium lounge for Business and First class passengers and I think you can also buy access to it as well. All reports are fantastic. Muscat lounge is adequate. I will have to pay banking conversion fee as well. If I hadn't so wanted a window seat as I can't imagine stepping over another sleeping person with any agility I would have risked going with Qatar who are a 5 star airline and with whom I have travelled in economy in the past. Bottom line for AUD4600 I am happy with flying Y to BKK and then onto Frankfurt and then Paris to BKK in J class. Hope my comments are helpful. Will write a trip report later. JoyVee

Not relevant at all to QF flights but is to topic of flying out of BKK and the above prices are economical for J. Hope someone finds it useful Mods can move if they find a better place for my effort. JoyV

it's relevant to this thread if purchased using one of the forementioned sites.

Out of interest and for future reference, if one has used that South American site to book, is it possible to get itinerary changes done by Qantas or do you have to go through the agency that booked the flight?

You need to go back to Brazil, unless the booking has an upgrade request in as I found out!

You always need to go through the TA/agency that booked the flight until the flight is under airport control

Not correct, see my post above yours for the exception, specifically any flight on the booking that has had an upgrade request on it takes away the ability for the TA to make changes.

Interesting post keep use informed

It does have some relevance. Some may people may book cheap Y seats to Asia and then get cheap J seats to Europe.

I am also going to attempt to make changes now that travel has commenced. Qantas said they could help out here ie date changes

Re Oman business class flights I investigated Expedia in UK , Ireland and Brazil but they were dearer than the website of airlines I checked. Qatar and Oman were comparable in price. Finnair was cheapest on this site but ifound unable to book multi city stops on their website and had to ring BNE office here to get flight quotation. Just illustrates that you really have to shop around and compare. Expedia.ie was great for my sister who wants to fly from MEL Belfast as I was able to tell her how much she saved by using the expedia.ie flight and catching train from Dublin airport direct to Belfast. I learn so much from everyone here. thanks Joyv

booked one in Brazil yesterday- PER-SIN return in August $500. Helps if there is a QF Asia sale on concurrently- that has been my experience at least.
Good luck!

The flights are on sale again on Qantas! We just need to wait until after midnight in Brazil :D

If you are looking to book the flights, maybe wait another 6 hours or so.
