Afternoon all, a bit of a newbie question for myself. I have a existing booking SYD-LAX , now I am considering a layover/stop over in LAX then onto TOR.
If I am reading the Sale fare rules correctly, I am looking at the change fee + whatever the fare LAX-TOR-LAX is , would that be correct?

Maybe change thread topic to "Qantas Sale fare change fee query". As LAX Layover/stopover question could be also for non ticket related issues?

Will depend on the ticket. Is it all one ticket SYD-LAX-YYZ-LAX-SYD or separate tickets. Is the QF fare combined with another airline's fare like AC?
The change fee is $250 (which i think is the most restrictive change fee as it is the Sale fare), plus fare re-pricing for the sectors in the ticket

You’re effectively refunding your ticket, buying a new one and adding the change fee, with your original payment deducted. The new fare will be SYD-TOR, not SYD-LAX plus LAX-TOR.

It’s probably a lot more expensive then just buying an add on ticket for the US domestic portion (if you actually mean TOR and not YYZ)

If you had booked your original ticket through a TA you could buy a second ticket on the same PNR and you would be protected, but if you bought from QF direct you won’t be able to do that. QF will just sell you a new fare to your new destination and deduct the original amount plus change fee.

Without knowing your original fare, dates and proposed flights it’s hard to assist.

But I will say, the easiest way to set fire to money, is to change a Qantas sale fare! 🤣

just buy another ticket for the LAX-YYZ it's going to be far cheaper than changing anything
Not necessarily. It is worth checking the price differential . Additionally the stopover is only in LAX and cancelling the LAX-YYZ-LAX sector and buying a separate AC ticket for LAX-YYZ-LAX makes the LAX-SYD sector unprotected assuming there is no stopover on the return.

Unfortunately meeting my partner at LAX, so locked into that.

QF doesn’t have the traffic rights to sell you a fare from LAX to YYZ, so you’re limited to fares between SYD and YYZ that allow a stop in LAX. Or just book a second ticket yourself.

The price difference is huge - over 2K extra for the dates I checked (yes in Y).

I’d be booking AA for a second ticket as there is some protection for oneworld flights on separate tickets. Definitely none if booked with AC. You can always reschedule your QF return if you are disrupted, even the cheapest fares can be changed with the change fee up until check in closes. Or just plan an overnight on the way home, safest bet.

Additionally, the cancel fare for a refund is $550 instead of change fee of $250 which is the same as cancelling for a flight credit.
In the end it is still worth to see what the airline is prepared to offer before assuming anything.
