Re: Qantas ripoff pricing.........."fleecing the flock" discounts overseas but not in

I'm guessing you're not one of those people who recently bought a SYD/LAX/SYD fare for USD473.00 by purchasing from a USA online TA?

The above fare in 1982 was AUD975.00 return.

What are specific examples of airfares and destinations that you claim are uncompetitive?

Although amusing, I think that its probably fair to point out that the recent fare quoted was a mistake (and so should be a larger number), and that the 1982 fare was at a time of a very different USD/AUD exchange rate - depending on the timing, possibly over USD1.10:AUD1.00.
But on the flip side... there's been a fair bit of inflation run through the system too...

just a tad :)

In any case, that is not a Qantas thing - all airlines are only managing to charge the same fares they did back 30 years ago - but there are a lot of factors forcing that too.

The majority of QF's patronage, at least in J, must come from either frequent flyer point redeemers or those whose fares are paid for by large corporates or government departments or enterprises.

And your basis for this wild assertion is ...???

I'm a QF J flyer who pays for his own international tickets. There are plenty of others.

Yes, they are often dearer than competitors. But I have great confidence in QF's safety, and I like to support a company which is providing jobs for Australians. (Same reason I've always insisted on Australian-made cars; sadly, not possible for much longer).

Re: Qantas ripoff pricing.........."fleecing the flock" discounts overseas but not in

This afternoon's database glitch (surprise - the error message confirmed QF uses Oracle ) kept me from commenting on the SIN-PER-SIN pricing.

Sale fares exSIN (SGD/AUD are essentially equal value now) have change penalties exceeding the fares. The change for Saver fares shows as $25.
At the moment the fares exPER are roughly similar, as is the change fee for Sale fares. exPER Saver fares have a change fee of $100.
All of the above subject to "assistance fees" unless able to be completed on-line.

However being in SIN opens a broad category of airlines and fares that will never be available exPER. Cheaper intra-Asia fares and (longer haul) premium cabin fares. Though those headed to Europe via CMB, might find some interesting exPER fares with code shares (on either QF or MH).

So, if the AUD hits 0.70USD and the SGD remains where it is (certainly the HKD will) then perhaps fares from Australia (on QF in particular) will once again become economically competitive.

It's amazing where you end up while wandering

+1

- am exactly the same - I pay for all my own tickets, and don't mind paying a bit more for Qantas metal and crews. (I do use every single trick I can learn to get the best fares, etc on Qantas)

Re: Qantas ripoff pricing.........."fleecing the flock" discounts overseas but not in

Then there are other matters such as QF's continued refusal to commence nonstop flights between MEL and some major overseas airports (ICN, KUL, MNL and under own metal, NRT are a quick four) which given that MEL's population is not far behind SYD's (and gaining) is surprising. Admittedly KUL does not feature in any QF nonstop own metal routings at all.

Qantas doesn't fly to ICN either and considering none of the Korean carriers fly to Melbourne (and with the ability to offer connections), I can't see QF flying there any time soon.

I'll be voting with my credit card and flying best value flights and not many will be QF.
I am not going to be critical of your post because everyone has a right to ask questions of things that do not look right.

Personally though I think you will find most airlines overcharge anyone travelling from Australia. For some reason they think Australians will pay more and they do.

For many years I used to purchase Qantas airfares ex-SIN for return trips back to Asia but the saving is not there anymore and sometimes airfares are cheaper ex-Australia. Airfares ex-Thailand, ex-Hong Kong are also generally more expensive.
