Qantas ripoff pricing.........."fleecing the flock" discounts overseas but not in Oz

I'm just planning a few o/seas trips.............QF is just not competitive but its worse, if you buy QF tickets overseas, they charge less than in Australia. Is that fleecing the flock? This approach is a bit hard to wear when QF pushes "nationalism" so hard in its advertising. Combine this with old aircraft, limited schedules, and push to get you on Jetstar.............I wonder what the future is for the Flying Kangaroo?

You can just about set your watch by the regularity of a post such as above. Pricing is a huge complex thing, and is similar the world over, for example CX and their ex TPE fares, etc

QF have new planes too, and I'm not sure what schedules you are referring to, but I know that MEL to SYD is serviced quite well

The future given their latest financial performance is pretty good.
So no idea what you are referring to.

Perhaps the OP should search the forums to see that QF are not the only airline to charge more for flights originating in Australia.

I am happy for arguments to be based on fact, but this is just a vent considering the widespread nature of this practice.

Same as every other international airline in the world. It's far cheaper to buy a BA ticket ex Australia than it is ex the UK, for example. All airlines charge less for tickets that originate away from their home country. Just one of the laws of airline economics.

Maybe there is another qantas website that I don't know about that has cheaper fares, because I am here in the Philippines looking at fares to get back to Australia.

I have searched fares from Manila to Sydney direct, also via Singapore and they are the same prices as Ex Australia.

So please let me know where to find these cheaper fares.

Just like any business, pricing is set to what customers will pay. If seats are being sold it means the price is right. I don't see any issues with QF pricing given the factors involved.

Its really interesting to note the tone of replies to my thoughts on QF pricing and the type of flyer.............generally supportive of QF's right to discriminatory pricing and high mile flyers......I guess they do it in their businesses and maybe they are corporate fliers where the company/client foots the bill or maybe they just benefit from QF heavy corporate discounts. That's all fine. Everybody is entitled to a view, and to spend there money where they like. I'll be voting with my credit card and flying best value flights and not many will be QF.

Or it just maybe that QF patrol the site to respond to critical posts.............not likely, they wouldn't do that..........

I don't know if anyone meant ill by their comments - its a constant frustration for many of us I guess. Nothing wrong with a good rant, I do it too when frustration levels reach a certain point

.. and this is the only logical conclusion in my view. I've been voting with my wallet for years now. After previously having been almost 100% QF for the last 2 years I haven't taken more than a couple of connecting flights with QF (and they were codeshares at that!)

I experimented with the idea of using SIN as my personal hub a few years ago, basically the idea would have been to buy QF return flights out of SIN (rather than return flights out of PER), the difference in price is significant, quite eye opening. The idea then would be to buy your onward tickets out of SIN to wherever you _really_ wanted to go - the key being to get out of australia as cheaply as you can and buy international tickets out of SIN at (generally) far reduced pricing. Unfortunately my travel plans tend to be all over the place and very often flying to SIN first isn't that convenient ... that and the additional hassle of managing the 'game' in this way .... I just gave up in the end and use other carriers.

All your posts appear to be against QF, what did you expect. We live in a deregulated economy in a democratic country.

Business is therefore free to do what it wants within the law to make a profit. For you the best fare of the day comes out as most economical and you should do that, for me I stick with QF as it's a good product and I don't want the cheapest ticket and cheapest product.

Also good to have a vent now and then as airlines including QF can get peoples blood pressure up, including mine and QF is no saint but I go back to free ecomony and democracy.

Excessive? Nah, I just love Qantas. But I do bag them when I feel the need (i.e. obscene costs of redeeming "free" points tickets - I hate that about Qantas!!)

While QF may not be the only airline to do this on its 'home' turf (even though QF is roughly 49 per cent foreign owned, something it is never keen to emphasise), that in a sense is irrelevant to Australians domiciled in Australia.

I too have looked at buying a one way ticket to my overseas destination and then purchasing return ticket(s) from it back to Oz continually, but as with many others the tying one down to particular travel dates that this results in makes it impractical.

So as with roughly 75 per cent of international travellers to and from Oz (not all of whom are domiciled here), my solution is to generally avoid QFi and patronise the Asian (or other) airlines. That helps in a minor way to ensure that QF has some competition and that is the best way to minimise what QF would doubtless like to be as close as possible to a monopoly for itself on routes.

Then there are other matters such as QF's continued refusal to commence nonstop flights between MEL and some major overseas airports (ICN, KUL, MNL and under own metal, NRT are a quick four) which given that MEL's population is not far behind SYD's (and gaining) is surprising. Admittedly KUL does not feature in any QF nonstop own metal routings at all.

The majority of QF's patronage, at least in J, must come from either frequent flyer point redeemers or those whose fares are paid for by large corporates or government departments or enterprises. Business travel agents may receive higher commissions (kickbacks?) if they can somehow get their unknowing client to pay more on QFi than travel with a competitor airline. Yet QFi's flight frequencies are not competitive with 'home' carriers such as CX or SQ.

The decline of the AUD has made basing international ticketing in SIN (or HKG or ...) rather less advantageous. And the change fees may influence the category of the fare, but with 12 month ticketing validity it is still very useful to consider "outside city" ticketing.

The variable that has far more effect though, is where the ticket starts (is sold). I'm finding that CMB is well worth the extra traveling when crediting to CX (or AA). Perhaps that is a benefit of retirement...

I'm guessing you're not one of those people who recently bought a SYD/LAX/SYD fare for USD473.00 by purchasing from a USA online TA?

The above fare in 1982 was AUD975.00 return.

What are specific examples of airfares and destinations that you claim are uncompetitive?

Im no particular fan of QF but they are a business not a charity. Most businesses I know try and maximise their return.

There is no point whinging about it, businesses respond to actions not words. The main reason by far they charge more in Oz is very simply because they can, outside Australia the appeal to Australian nationalism has no value whatsoever.

Whether that appeal to Australian nationalism should be of value is one for individuals but the fact they continue to do it and people do continue to pay more for QF kind of indicates that plenty of people are persuaded by it.

if you don't like it go elsewhere but I suspect plenty will keep on using QF and whether I agree with them is somewhat moot.
