Can I buy a return qantas flight but just travel the second leg? I thought I read as long as I contact them and say in advance that we can't make the first leg. Any experience with this?

No - unfortunately you cannot do this.

If you miss the outbound flight all subsequent flights will be cancelled.

The bit about contacting them in advance... that's just to keep your ticket 'active', so that you can make alternative arrangements to take the flight you missed. You still have to fly that outbound flight.

Thanks, yes I thought this might b the case...... bummer

You can take the first leg, if it’s worth buying the return ticket from the other direction.
