LOL :p FWIW - Recent attempts to make/keep SIN as a hub / focus city has benefits for your's truly, however MEL and BNE are definitely neglected c.f. SYD.
Indeed but with SIN lounge operating hours that rival PER it seems more like an 'up yours' than anything else :)

I'm sorry to say this but Joyce is delusional. Currently on 730 saying that there has been no brand damage since last October. Really then why have I moved about 30% of my flights to DJ and why am I spending more per flight with DJ than I am with QF, on average?

AJ doesn't really care, he is just concentrating for his salary to be what it is now or higher :)

I disagree on that. I think he cares, and I think he wants QF to be successful, I just don't think he has the skills to lead QF. I am sure he is a very capable manager, he just doesn't give me the impression he is a leader.

He could well be right, about no brand damage since last October. Maybe October was the bottom, but the brand damage occurred well before then!!

Fair point, well made. Can I question his later statement that they are investing in more fuel efficient aircraft for Qantas?

The changes AJ & co are making and the airline he runs doesn't particularly concern me as I am a DJ flyer not Qf. And my QFF silver status was achieved through one off flights that I & The company I work for didn't pay for.

however it seems as clear as crystal to me, the majority, or even large minority of people on this form (i.e the customers) are unhappy with the business and are switching or contemplating switching some or all of their business to the competition. QF management aren't doing a good enough job. And i believe eventually this will catch up to them and we will see more similar profit results in the mid to long term.

Rant over.

Ps. Give VA/DJ a go and you'll never look back. And it's only getting better. ;)

For sure. But does "Qantas" mean "Qantas" the branded airline or "Qantas Ltd"? Two very different beasts. Spin, spin and more spin......

I'm probably a little unusual on AFF (No jokes please :p) I actually quite like, and use extensively, the QF international product. My preference domestically is DJ/VA though - as a result of the status match and Joyce's decision to treat customers with contempt. I actually enjoy flying DJ.

DJ/VA just doesn't cut it internationally for the frequent long haul flyer. The codeshares and tie ins are loose, I don't know where I stand with benefits with partner airlines. With QF it is pretty much seamless within Oneworld. I like certaintly and QF delivers it for me.

Yes, I must admit the "one off flights" were long haul international bookings. But I'd much rather fly SQ than qantas to Asia, etihad is a bit of a weak link though, especially in economy.
Fingers crossed for *A announcement Tuesday (yes I realize it's not going to happen)

I can't see it happening but if it did I would certainly maintain top tier in *A as well as Oneworld. In the long term I probably would migrate my business away from QF.

On a separate note the real cost to QF of the grounding would include the business lost to DJ over the last 10 months.

Certainly agreed.. Just does not 'tick all the boxes" which is what is required to manage the diverse intricacies of an airline such as QANTAS. There appears to be a certain lacking in the disposition of AJ to be a successful leader.

Disclaimer: Without being too critical.. Just an educated observation

Did AJ trumpet the nbnco contract today?

There's no better time to start, then!

Only problem is that there's probably not enough tequila. :-|

If I may say, that's an uncharacteristically positive-leaning appraisal from you, TonyHancock. That said, I'm still of the opinion that the QF board, including AJ, exists mostly only to satisfy shareholders and shareholders only, if even they are achieving their objective. The board are mostly ethically challenged and pay little regard to being a good corporate entity in the social sense, though suffice to say it is plausibly arguable that the other members of the board are more ethically deficient than AJ is.

Yes, you may, as in that I believe is BS.

Does anyone know how competent the fuel hedging boffins for QF are?

It begs to reason that the idea of simply divesting the fleet of any "fuel inefficient" aircraft and replacing them with "fuel efficient" aircraft can't be as simple as that, right? Otherwise, it would seem to be as plain as the nose on one's face that accelerating the uptake of 787 and A380 aircraft would be a no-brainer idea. But there's got to be a financial catch in this, right?

I wouldn't. It'd be like winning the top prize on penny slots and spending it on a bottle of Champagne.

My original thought was that cancelling the 787 and deferring the A380 is the opposite of getting fuel efficient aircraft, and so my issue is with Joyce claiming that they are doing that. Acknowledge that Jetstar are getting fuel efficient aircraft, but I'm really not sure how that helps QFi (should that be QAi?) But having said all that, and to answer your question, the financial catch is Capital. They don't want to have the debt and expense involved in spending $8 Billion. Which is fair enough, but just don't claim (lie) that you're getting more fuel efficient aircraft when you aren't. So I'd say they think their fuel hedging boffins are good enough to cost less than the interest on $8 billion.

Problem is that with the $A parked well above $US there's never been a better time to buy Boeing aircraft... So Allan's not planning far ahead here :(

I guess the answer remains the same, they don't want to spend $8 billion, no matter what. Well maybe on JQ.

There was an interesting story on the ABC's 7.30 Report regarding a lack of transparency in Qantas accounting practices.

Essentialy it highlighted the strong concern among current employees and former executives that the current management is shifting as many costs as it can away from low cost carrier Jetstar and on to the books of Qantas. The aim is to keep Jetstar looking as profitable as it possibly can. The aviation unions argue these increased costs are then used as justification for cutting staff numbers and conditions at Qantas.

Tony Webber, a former Qantas Chief Economist went on record that in his opinion Jetstar makes use of many services that they don't actually pay for, such as the legal department, corporate communications, investor relations and other back office overheads which are funded by Qantas. There were further allegations that other costs attrubitable to the Jetstar expansion overseas were booked against the Qantas International business to mask the true costs of Jetstar.

I have. Right now it feels like I'm dating two women and I'm trying to make sure each one doesn't know I'm sleeping with the other one.
