And even more so when it's not the day before New Year's Eve ........

I was about to say the same thing, a bit unfair to compare a last minute cancellation on new years eve to one where they had a few hours notice (whilst it was still in the air) to organise things on the ground during a non holiday/non special event.

Also timing helped, with 5 overnight flights MEL (and 15 in total to east coast Australia) on various carriers. A few hours later and the delay could be much longer - with only 2 days flights to MEL (5 to east coast) may have been be harder to re-accommodate pax.

All A380 in this peak travel season Nov-Deb are being flogged. No A380 in Manila maintenance currently

They're busy, but it's certainly not a case of flogging them. Like all aircraft, they work better if kept on the move. Day to day maintenance happens, and that should be all that is needed.
