Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

I’d rather not be gaslit - their own marketing collateral has made it clear that MEL will not see Sunrise. Which is their commercial imperative - thankfully lots of options Europe-bound (and as mentioned, be nice for this to kill the Australia tax!).

What I am curious about is who will be crewing these flights? I’m guessing no different to the PER-LHR sector (London based)? Curious how those NZ familiarisation flights would work if so.

Qantas have now published an animation of the SYD to LHR route options here, showing 2 westbound routes followed by the arctic polar route

Interestingly it shows the westbound flight arriving hours before sunrise in London, while the polar flight lands shortly after sunrise.

But how do you induce demand without operating the service? There’s a myriad of one-stop options, all of which avoid a narrowbody (and in the case of SYD, a bus transfer).

I happily flew MEL-PER-LHR back in the day when it was operated by the same frame.

It’s just nuts that so many people on here think the routes are locked in the minute the aircraft are delivered and there’s never going to be any changes.

It was only a few years ago all the AFFs were complaining that QFi had abandoned PER. Now they’re prompted to “Global Hub”.

QF's mockups of the IFE screens suggest the SYD-LHR flight will be 20 hours and 20 minutes, and will include 3 meal services (first 1-2 hours after takeoff, another around 8 hours in, and then breakfast around 2 hours before landing). These timings are anchored around reducing jetlag and shifting to London time by delaying sleep to the 2nd half of the flight)

I don't think many would love to be waken up in the middle of the night in Australian time to actually eat?
Oops. I forgot the Qantas is famous for its extremely slow in flight service which means one meal service will take 3 hours to complete!

They’re launching SYD-LHR before offering the service.

But yes, I get that there’s a self fulfilling prophesy aspect.

But QF know exactly how many peeps are booking via their channels MEL-LHR, whether that be via DXB, PER, SIN or SYD. If the numbers stack up, they’ll do it. Same applies for JFK (they can see who’s flying to NYC via DFW, AKL, SYD etc).

I guess the real question is, would you rather be strung along now with no hope of a route launch until ~2030 or what they've currently done which is quietly drop Melbourne off their slides. By the sounds of it, you would prefer the former.

Neither. I'm merely noting a significant pivot in Qantas' current strategy.

As I said, QF know exactly who’s buying what via their various channels. If they’re not seeing sufficient bookings to LHR or JFK, they’re not going to bump in a PS flight.

If Melbournians want non-stop LHR, start buying more QF flights (mainly EK codeshares or via SIN).

If they’re happy with SQ, QR, EY, EK (not via QF), CX etc then don’t complain about no PS flights.

No QR flights have caught on fire with all meals there being done on demand.

“Use it” was clearly meaning booking trips on QF now. There aren’t non-stop flights ex SYD yet either but expected demand is already there.

PS flights compliment existing QF one-stop routes. If the loads out of MEL don’t justify launching one-stop, then it won’t happen. If peeps take their money elsewhere, then expect even less QF flights ex MEL.

Chicken and egg. QF doesn’t offer a reasonable flight option from MEL to SIN to connect with QF1 atm. QF can’t expect a massive improvement in bookings if they don’t improve their offering.
