Qantas Premium Economy

I have been checking some airfares.

Example on a route like BNE to the UK then PE is just over $5,000 while economy was just under $2,000.

Looking at some prices for someone going to San Francisco; economy is selling for some days at $670 and other days for $1,100 while PE is asking $1,800; these prices each way. For just under half then maybe PE is worthwhile but more than double then I don't think it is that good.

I first flew PE on Air NZ which was about 50% more than economy and definitely worthwhile; the food back then was the same as economy but you received the J class wine and spirits.

I have been checking some airfares.
For my current trip, the following fares were available and considered:

Routing: BNE-KUL return, with stopover in HKG

BLFF = $1595
YLFF = $1818
TLSS = $2056
WFF = $2998
JRT = $7099

or on a different routing (BNE-HKG return)

BLFFA1 = $1752
TLSSHK = $1772
YLFFA1 = $2046
WFFHK = $3598
JRT = $8748

So travelling to KUL via HKG was cheaper than just travelling to HKG. Ended up with the BLFF fare and an op-up to Y+ on SYD-HKG. But the interesting fare comparison is BLFFA1 vs TLSSHK being $20 more to travel in Y+. Obviously the T fare conditions are more restrictive than B when it comes to pre-purchase, changes etc, which basically meant a T fare was not going to work for this trip as I know I am going to be making changes to flights as the project morphs. So B provided the best compromise between cost, flexibility and seat availability.

Prices shown are published fare prices excluding taxes and surcharges. With our corporate discount applied to the BLFF fare, the all included fare was about the same as the published base fare.

All those codes took me a while to work out; you needed tags on them all to work out what they all meant.

I have booked a PE flight next month SYD-SIN and return.
On the way to SIN I have been allocated 38K on the A380, according to Seatguru this is right up the back on its own, has anyone every sat here or have any opinions on it?
Also if I want to change my pre-allocated seat how do I do so?

There are only 4 seats left in PE and an almost empty J class. Here's hoping they push some of us forward to skybeds. don't know the likelyhood of that happening.

Cheers!

My husband & I have just returned from LHR via SIN on Qantas A380 Premium Economy. We loved the experience.

Small cabin lots of extra leg room, wider seas, more storage and good head phones. The cabin crew were very relaxed and friendly spending quite a bit of time talking to us while serving. The speed of boarding and disembarking was also great.

We have previously always flown economy, because of finances (only once upgraded) and would seriously look at flying Premium Economy on our next trip.

For the extra $$$ I wouldn't bother upgrading to Premium Economy. Food is really no better, service is the same, legroom not that much improved. I've been upgraded to it a few times - the only time I've ever flown this class, and wouldn't pay for it or use my hard earned points either.

It's ok, but for the extra amount they are charging, it is still sorely lacking.

My hubby and I flew PE earlier this year on the A380 Syd- LA return. We were quite impressed with the service and seating (though it is no substitute for the flat skybeds). The food was pretty much same standard as business; the only difference I could pick out was the lack of separate entree, dessert and freshly made scrambled eggs for breakfast! Drinks and snacks were pretty much the same I think.

The crew were really fabulous and looked after us on a full flight. It was just as good as business class service. Slept quite well considering. I think we would pay for it again only if it was on sale.

Otherwise to Europe, I don't think it is worth double the fare. I would prefer to make a stopover in Asia, stay at a top hotel like Raffles or the Peninsula, have a 3 hr spa treatment & nice dinner. And you'd still have money left over than if you paid full price for PE.

sounds like you were on a free "half upgrade" HUP ? where you actually got economy service with a better seat.

Premium Econ is the same as business without the PJs, kit, points, seat, lounge axs and purple biz luggage tag.

It's definately not economy food.

For a while there NZ was charging $$$$ for PE... (Clearly folks were paying it too) Looking for next year there are plenty of dates when return SYD-AKL-LAX is available for AUD $2700.. which I think is a fair price for the product! SYD-AKL vv is not PE of course... but with NZ or *A status or Koru membership "Space+" seating is offered on those flights...

For those not familiar with it.... NZ's Y+/PE has much better leg room (40-42" compared to 32-34" in Y), deeper recline, more width (on the 747),"Business lite" meal service, amenity kit and extra baggage allowance....

That price makes V Australia PE direct SYD-LAX look good

I'm booked on QF 31 and QF 32 in late January (23rd and 30th to be exact; SYD-LHR-SYD) on a paid PE ticket.

I've requested an upgrade to J.

What's everyones (well maybe WP's) experiences with op-ups on this sector? Is there more chance given I have a paid PE ticket?

It is the A380.

Also, given my experience this year where I have had a high number of op-ups domestically and TT... I assume QF places a high value on my patronage (140 odd sectors per year).

Yes - being in PE puts your points upgrade request ahead of WPs in economy and all golds, silvers etc in every class.

You are very likely to get your upgrade.

RB.. what dates??

I just looked for the same dates as the NZ fare I quoted...... VA is AUD$3589 in PE!

Answered my own question.. yep.. excellent fares in March....Just under $2000.. Looks like the fares jump back up from April 1.....
