I've had a pleasant surprise.

I ended the year with 885 status credits. Six hundred of those were from status support; the other 295 from flights. I was expecting a rollover of 285 but I actually got 285 plus a further 100 for Points Club. That sounds to me like double-dipping. I didn't expect it, anyway.

Mine was the same in August 2021, I don’t consider it double dipping. Seperate requirements of the program to get the differing rollovers, otherwise there would be no benefit to achieving points club plus in 2021. :)

I was just looking back through some past Classic Award Redemptions, as a Points Club member, and noticed that for those that were booked as Y, with an upgrade request successful to J, that they were only earned in the Points Club as a Y fare.

Eg:

09-Dec-2021 QF 0471 ECONOMY CLASSIC REWARD/BUSINESS REWARD 09-DEC-2021 SYDNEY/MELBOURNE X9FLWO
+7 SC Earned

This was booked as Classic Reward Y (X), then Classic Reward upgraded to J (U).

Why would this not earn at J (U) rate of 16 SC? (as per: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/freque...ne-earning-tables/classic-flight-rewards.html)

I assume for the same reason that an upgraded regular paid commercial fare earns at the rates applicable to the original paid fare. If you have originally booked U class, then you would receive business class status credits.

However, it is possible that QF (and some partner airlines) occasionally mistakenly credit upgraded flights at the higher cabin class. But if that happens, its a bonus and not what is supposed to be credited to your account.

A vague recollection this was discussed many pages ago and that upgrades are specifically excluded.

If that’s correct, take J Reward if possible.

Especially with Fly Flexible, you can change the booking to U class (not upgrade) without penalty and earn the higher SC.

I think in all cases you save a small amount of points too, e.g. SYD-MEL Y award + upgrade is 21,000 points vs SYD-MEL J award is 18,400 points

Thanks @NM @SYD @sudoer - makes sense and the story checks out there!

I hear you re: going for an outright J Reward vs Y upgrade path, but sometimes I'm booking last minute or have limited flexibility around the flying times / dates, and there aren't any left, so I go for the old Y award + Upgrade and take a punt, and don't have much choice!

Appreciate the insights here - cheers!

I had the same thing happen to me last week with a flight from Melbourne to Sydney. I was originally booked in J with a Classic Award, but then I needed to change to an earlier flight. There was J availability (for a new booking), but when I tried to change the time through 'Manage My Booking' it said there was no J availability and only let me select Y. I selected Y and received a refund of the QFF points immediately. I then upgraded from Y to J, paying an extra 3,000 QFF points than I otherwise would have with my original J Award because I simply couldn't be bothered to wait for hours on the phone trying to get it fixed.

The nail in the coffin? Status credits paid for a Y Award as a PC+ member.

No idea why I couldn't select the J option when changing the existing booking, but I could for a new booking.

You can only change a classic award to another flight is they is U class available. Just because there is J/D/I class available does not permit changing a U-class classic award to that flight. Once you secured an X-class fare for the new flight you were then able to submit an upgrade request. Upgrade requests are processed in various ways, and particularly close to departure the system may allow upgrades into J/D/I class when there is on U class available.

There was a U class available when I tried to create a new booking, but it wasn't showing when changing the existing booking.

Strange, especially as it allowed you to change to an X-class fare on the new flight, so was obviously not within a window deemed too close to flight departure to change on-line.

I qualified for points club a month ago but still have not received my hotel voucher . What’s the best way to follow up and how long does it usually take to receive ?

I just qualified for Points Club Plus. The email with hotel voucher code arrived a few days later, definitely within a week.

Are you sure you have opted in to receive advertising emails from QF?
