Finished at 2,520,000 for London. Gee I was close to the mark. I hope the winning bid enjoys the trip.

So, with bit of time whilst waiting for a flight (and a couple of beers deep), I decided to analyse the recent points auction items that have concluded (noting that the RRP is based on QF's assessment and the NP dinner is definitely not worth $10k). Anyway, on to the analysis:

AuctionRRPPointsPoints Per $ of ValuePAXPoints per Pax
Tee time$ 7,500700,00193.34175,000
SYD for NYE experience$ 15,0001,115,00074.32557,500
First class, all the way experience$ 10,000530,01353.01535,334
Winter in Whistler, BC experience$ 50,0002,750,00155.021,375,001
London calling experience$ 40,0002,520,00063.021,260,000
Devour South Australia experience$ 20,000900,51045.02450,255
The private jet set experience$ 50,0003,600,00072.024150,000

  • The cheapest in terms of points per $ of value (based on RRP) was the South Australian Experience
  • The most expensive in terms of points per $ of value (based on RRP) was the golf experience
  • The lowest number of points per person was the NP dinner
  • The higher number of points per person was the Whistler Experience
So, what does the above tell us. Absolutely nothing...except for the fact that people will spend points on the things the perceive to get value from. On that note, off to purchase a toaster...

Interesting that the Whistler trip went for more points than the London trip.

Yes, but it's (according to QF) worth ~$10k more so would expect that to be the case

When you are getting 2c value per point it's not so bad - but I would question the estimated value of some of these items.

Agreed on both points, particularly the 'estimated value' - there is no way a dinner for 15 pax in the F-lounge by NP is worth over $650 per person. I mean that's more expensive that Quay with the premium wine pairing...

Brilliant table Fergo747. Very interesting. thank you!
My pleasure.

There will be some logic to the pricing - but probably subjective and involving double counting.

E.g.

Mr Perry's personal consultancy/appearance fee - $5000
Entrance to the First Lounge 15 @ $150 - $2250
Food 15 @ $100 - $1500
Wine 15 @100 - $1500

Yesterday was the last day. There were two items auctioned - a pair of 747 Premium Economy seats which went for 510,747 points and an A330 Business seat which went for 1,888,889 points.

Interesting. Am I right in thinking that when flying, a business class seat is roughly twice the price of a premium economy one. And this offer had two premium economy seats or one business class one. So the selling price should have been the same? Perhaps a demonstration that people really think premium economy is overpriced and overrated. ;)
