To all the newly-minted Platinum One frequent flyers out there... I'm curious to hear... what's been your experience so far?

Anything different?

Free upgrades?

... or all hype?

I'll requalifyfor P1 for the third time (was one of the originals) next week, barely 6 months into the membership year. OVer the 2.5 years of membership the only experience I've been invited to was a concert on the gold coast. Nevertheless, getting my favourite seat 9 out of 10 flights remains a perk that I truly appreciate.

It does make you wonder if QF can distinguish between those that meet the "required spend"* to reach P1 and those that don't.

My biggest criticism of P1 is that those who are reaching it through bum in seat miles without DSC's probably find it hard to get to any events because they are usually on a QF flight. Quite ironic really.

My own preference is for QF to beef up in flight service levels to P1, then the benefit is received by those that fly the most. By reducing events they might also be able to reduce cost.

*Based upon comments from the lunch with Lesley where QF suggested people were reaching P! with only 25% of the required spend.

I'm shocked that someone can qualify with 25% of the spend. I do it the hard way, with the consequential impact on family and social life, racking up in excess of 5000sc's a year flying almost every week of the year. You'd think that was quantitatively different in value to QF from someone doing 25% of 3600 sc's

At the recent lunch with Lesley and the team, there was some talk about people reaching P1 using JASAs and DSCs. My follow up question was prefaced by telling them that, that was exactly how I'd done it.

I reckon they know exactly how each member has attained their status and their real value to QF.

I think the 25% comment was in regards to the low $ value of the SC earned through mASAs etc, as opposed to only doing 25% of 3600SC

(I'll preface this comment by saying I earned over 2000 SC's from MASA's (No DSC's) in my current year, so I have certainly not spent the "full amount" whatever that is.)

I'm not sure QF does. When I read through this thread I see plenty of P1's who are spending the money but don't seem to be getting any benefits.

Because Qantas had to manually count my SCs to award my P1 status they could see all of the DSC and JASA trips. Whether or not they actually treat people differently is then up to them.

Which then makes a mockery of the QF statement slating cost of MASA P1's as a reason for doing away with the MASA. If they are aware of those that have not spent the money to get there then don't offer them the unpublished benefits. (There is nothing in the P1 benefits that says you will be invited to X number of events or that you will get X upgrades.

I think it doesn't matter how people reach P1. Once you got it, you should be treated equally as the rest of P1s. I'm getting my P1 every year through a lot of Dom flying, no MASA and no DSCs but I don't mind sharing the benefits (what benefits?!) equally with everyone else.
The thing that bothers me the most about this program is that benefits are not shared equally and that's unfair IMO. Every P1 should receive an equal amount of upgrades (in proportion to the amount of flights off course) and an equal amount of special events invitations.
At the moment the system is not fair and there are too many "personal favours" going around. I think there should be some sort of automated system who is in charge of an equal distribute of benefits, no matter if you got P1 by MASA, DSCs, Y, J or F flights.

DSC has to cost a heck of a lot more than MASAs, they are giving it away for free! Imagine all the extra SG and WPs that got a leg up because of it.

If they factored the MASA removal purely on cost then DSC will be a dead duck (which it won't be)

So because of MASAs and DSC how many extra P1s would there be ? 100? 200? Either way blaming extra p1s for its removal is a fib.

I have no qualms about removing them, but just call it like it is stop the BS spin.

Simplification, yeah right, sack the BS marketers and you have a cost saving and new look airline right there!

I think QF is struggling with too many WPs, not P1s.
If you work out MASA and DSCs well, it's so easy to reach WP with very little cost/flying.

Given how hard they were to book on the phone, I think it would be more like low double digits.

ketsuzei @ WP1 with an asterisk

Hell, I don't mind admitting it; I did the odd JASA. Got to know TSV pretty well. (I especially like the sign in the terminal building that says "If you don't know how to use the escalator please use the lift.")

I also like ketsuzei's idea of the asterisk; I am going to immediately change my profile to so that I can be identified as one of the "impure."

That must have been a couple of very circuitous trips to get to 1400

MEL-DXB-LHR-DXB-MEL = 560 SC's X 2 for DSC = 1120
MEL-BNE-MEL = 120

1240 SC's, 6 sectors, two weeks in total, and WP regained. this was in the first two weeks of her new QF year.

Took me three months to requalify - how I suffered for those three months. :p

Forgot about DSC, some of us are not so lucky :(
