Qantas one of 11 airlines fined $1.1 billion for rigging cargo prices

QANTAS is among 11 air cargo carriers fined a total of $1.1 billion by the European Commission for running a freight cartel.


“It is deplorable that so many major airlines coordinated their pricing to the detriment of European businesses and European consumers,” European competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia said today.

Of the 11 airlines, Qantas received one of the lowest fines - $12.3 million. The airline said it was looking at the judgment.

Maybe Qantas could send them a $15M RR Trent 972 in place of the fine. They will have a few lying around "spare" at the moment.

Interesting to see CX and SQ were part of the cartel, with the latter having to cough up a fair whack. That's a lot of bottles of vintage Dom that'll have to go begging.

Once again, the ol' immunity for the tattle-tale rule comes in place.

This isn't the only kind of cartel or the like which is being / has been investigated. I think they haven't decided on the other cartel that the Virgin group (VS) is part of but CX dobbed in first.... (I think that's correct)

This was mentioned on 10 as part of the A380 saga, only QF was mentioned. $12odd mill is fairly small in the scheme of things
