I'm still a bit new here, so I hope this is a sensible question. I'm booked to fly from ADL to MEL in business (upgrade from economy flexisaver) on a Qantas 737-800 (QF680 4/10/13). I have gold status with Qantas. When I first booked the flight, I could only see seats in row three. The seats to port were already taken. I understand from this site that row 3 is all a gold FF can see to select a seat. I didn't bother selecting one of these seats because I was waiting for T80 - when the other seats open up. Anyway, a week out from the flight, I had a look at the seat map using the Qantas page and it now won't let me see the seat map and says "not eligible for Advance Seat Selection". I'm not sure why it's doing this (It's not a code-share booking). My only thought is that all of the seats in row 3 have now been selected by other passengers. Because all seats in row three are taken and because, as a gold FF, I can't see rows 1 and 2 (until T80) this error message crops up. What do other people think? Many thanks.

moon2001,

I assume that you are referring to the first three rows of economy which are actually rows 4, 5 and 6. I am not sure why it now won't let you select seats so I suggest you give them a call to ask. Just confirming that your FF number is in the booking.

In future I suggest you always allocate yourself the best available seat as you should (normally) be able to reallocate as required.

Thanks Bill. The seat is in business and the FF number is on my booking. You're most probably right, I should select a seat early - but if my theory is correct, I must be in row 1 or 2 now.

Row three is occupied according to Expertflyer, 2A is also occupied. All other seats in J are currently unoccupied. It is probably worth a call to QF to get a seat allocated.

As straitman suggested it is always worth getting the best available seat at the time of booking, or upgrade, and then keep an eye on things to try and improve it.

Oops. Sorry.

I didn't read enough of the detail of your post. I read the economy bit but skimmed over the upgrade bit. :oops:

.... and if you are tall then Row 2 is better for leg room than row 1.

Thanks Tony. It's interesting to hear that row 3 is occupied - and it confirms what I was thinking. I had a trial with ExpertFlyer, but most probably need to pay and register. Thanks also to Bill.

Just to answer my own question...At T-80, I logged into the QANTAS site. When I went to 'select seats' the error message of "not available for advance seat selection" no longer came up and I was able to select a seat in row 1. It therefore seems that, if all all of the seats that you are allowed to see according to your status have been selected, then the error message appears. I noticed that someone else on this site wondered if you might be able to see seats further forward - this doesn't seem to be the case. Once T80 has passed, however, you can see the seats further forward and select them.

I've had a similar message for the past four weeks:

[h=1]Select a Seat[/h][h=1]Please review the following items[/h]
  • Your flight is not eligible for Advance Seat Selection however you can nominate aisle or window seat preference.

I'm not sure if you have looked at the seats taken with ExpertFlyer. They offer a free trial. You may see that all the seats that you are eligible to see (depending on status) have been taken. In which case, wait until 80 hours before the flight (T80) and you should be able to select a seat.

Not necessarily - I tried at T-80 for my international flight on Saturday and still no go on choosing seats. Had to suck it up and call, couldn't get bulkhead seats though.
