Hi, this might be in the wrong place or previously covered. I did a search, but didn't find anything, so I am putting this in here. Feel free to (re)move.

I seem to luck out and get on Qantas 737-800's (738) everywhere I go, sure I do fly intra-state cattle haulers so the 738 and 717 fleet is more than known to me. It sure beats the days of flying the BAE 14x series of yester-year. I know that the 738 is the workhorse of the fleet and that with 44 of them, I am going to see them everywhere.

Today I had the pleasure of flying on the new Qantas 737-800, this next generation aircraft was designated VZL and named Newcastle. I am unsure if that means anything to anyone here, but I am sure that someone will salivate over the information at some point. Walking up to the plane I didn't notice anythign different, it was 6am and dark at my origin and I barely open my eyes at this time of the day as I walk across the tarmac at the origin airport anyway. These short haul flights for this are like second nature to me now.

Once onboard though, I immediately noted that this was different. A darker interior in the galley section and then a brighter interior in the cabin. The lights in teh cabin seem vibrant and bright, but not so much that they hurt your eyes. Someone has seriously thought about colour temperature and it shows. The J cabin was strikingly different, with seats that were clean and seemed a little less "padded" like on some of the aging 738's. Unfortunately Qantas had not upgraded me on this flight (something that I enjoy as a WP and seem to get about 75% of the time on my regular flights) so I can not comment that much on the J cabin. Someone at Qantas is probably trying to keep the "new smell" in the J cabin as there was only 2 pax up there and myself and the other regularly bumped WP's were in Rows 4&5. The colour scheme is the same as the economy, a colour that I can not describe, a light brown, a beige. Either way it is pretty much the Qantas colour now I guess.

I moved to my favoured of seats in teh 738's in row 4. I prefer 4A and 4F for their extended leg room and more space under the J seat in front to place my bag. On the shorter flights, I find that the Window seats of 4A and 4F are better than having the aisle to deal with.

The new Economy seat is nice. Greater pitch, about the same width, with a higher back. The arm rests do seem a little thinner now, but not as much of an issue as I initially thought. The tray table came out of the arm rest easily and smoothly, but was smaller than I remember the older 738's having. This is not a huge issue, but I did find my laptop not fitting properly and moving around a lot.

Inseat entertainment is a big draw card here. Row 4 has the "Pull Out of your arm rest" type of screen that actually came out first time. :) The touch screen was responsive, but I could tell that the system was not super fast itself. The system featured all the usual InSeat fare, but also has USB connectivity. For pax in this row, you'll have to get friendly with the pax in teh window seat as they have the USB ports and Power Socket behind their left leg.

The aircraft itself felt very nice. No annoying creaks, groans, cracks, thuds or bumps during taxi at all. Take off was super smooth and I was not 100% sure that we in the air for the first few moments. There was none of the old 738's overly loud hydraulic noises or the feeling tht the aircraft is attempting to flap it's own wings off at any point. The quietness extends in air as well, where the cabin is quieter; I didn't have to speak loudly for the FA to hear me. And astonishingly, the PA can be heard and understood when both the CSM and the Pilot spoke.

Some things that might be a little strange... The no smoking sign is painted on, no illumination (not a biggy, I always wondered why they needed a light anyway). The controls for the in seat entertainment for Channel and Volume are placed in an awkward spot inside the arm, half way along your leg, inconvenient if the tray table is out as you can't get to it. The headphone jack is on the front of the arm rest (also not a biggy).

I am hoping that these new 738's get more runs on the routes that I frequent. I have 8 flights coming up, 7 of which are on 738's (one on a 717 :( ) and I'd love to be able to get on these next gen aircraft for as many of them as possible.

Thanks for the review Yorik.

Don't think I'll luck out any time soon getting VZL, but I do look forward to it.

I believe the new seats reflect the new QF domestic / Trans-Tasman J and Y products (i.e. Silverwing and Weber). There has been various (skewed to negative) review on the new J seating vs. Millennium.

How is the overhead space? Did you try reclining? Someone (at Boeing, I think (of course)) said that overhead space should be improved, but some people did the math or testing and said there was no improvement (or even the opposite). In saying that, when everyone on board brings a rollerboard, there is no hope in Hell.....

I didn't put any bags in the over head bins, but I did see a few people that I frequently travel with and they mentioned a little more room, if only slighty. I did notice that there was a little more standing room and the over head controls were a little further out of my reach than normal. Often I am standing half crouched waiting to get out of the plane, to which this morning I was pleasantly surprised by an extra inch or two. So I'd say that there is a little more room.

The window configuration in Row 4 is a little different. On the window seat you the raised section between the windows righ next to your shoulder, which could be troublesome for some, but it is a lot nice to lean on or possibly sleep on. I know that somewhere I saw that the windows were going to be larger, but I didn't notice this at all.

The seat reclined nicely, but I don't think it was any further than previous 738's. I think that the way the seat back feels might be misleading in this.

The seat types look thin and there definitely is not as much padding. This is fine now, but as the padding ages, these seats will become uncomfortable quickly. The aging BAE 14x fleet had terrible seats that you could feel the framework, I sincerely hope that this is not repeated as the rest of the aircraft is really nice.

Apparently these are more efficient, but as I don't get to see the "price at the pump" or any decrease in flight cost, I think that is negated unless I decide to invest in QAN shares. I would however expect to see a decreased carbon offset cost, which I haven't checked, but I don't offset work flights, only my personal ones.

Thanks Yorik for your answers.

I think it's suffice to say there isn't an airline in the world as of yet (at least, from what I can see) which has implemented cost saving measures like reducing the weight carried on aircraft and passed those onto the consumer (disregarding downward price pressure due to deregulation or new competition). So not holding my breath on that.

I think most will find the seats tolerable as a compensation for increased "living space" (i.e. not just pitch, but the space you can maneuver, or lack thereof). Certainly, these new thin-shell seats are becoming vogue all around the world. I do agree though that as the padding wears or when very heavy people take the seat, there could be issues in that (either for comfort and / or replacement processes). For now, it's not a bad seat at all compared to its predecessor.

How did you find the airbag seatbelt? I've had reports from 2xCLs in row 4 (C+D) of the new aircraft (was it's maiden pax service actually) and they hated the airbag seatbelt.

Any thoughts on that?

I must admit that I didn't really notice the Air Bag Seat Belts being uncomfortable. I do fly a bit and in varied aircraft around the world, so I guess it has to be really uncomfortable to annoy me. The Mechanism is a little different and certainly more bulky, but not what I would call uncomfortably so.

This week, I managed to get into J on the same plane. Seat 1F actually. The J seats seem a little roomier and this can be attributed to the thinner arm rests, the smaller between seat fixed tray and less padding. There are only 2 seat controls in J, Footrest and Recline, gone are all of the rest of the controls. The In Arm Display was good, but mine seemed to not stow properly propping up the arm rest slightly. The controls for the screen were in the front of the arm rest. The tray table is smaller in this new plane and it only comes across about 65-75% of the way across the seat. Likely to accomodate the Entertainment Screen. Either way, with my laptop on it and then the breakfast tray on top it was swamped and gone as usual.

The J seats are nice, even with out the extra adjustment, they were soft and firm, but this could just be the new padding in there and not a function of anything more. I think that the leg room is slight lost in Row 1 compared to the older 738's, but only by an inch or so maybe.

One thing that annoys me about the in arm entertainment is that you can't get the radio going once you've stowed the unit, so for descent you're stuck with your own thoughts, which for me is never good..

I've flown the airbag row 4 several times, it is fine :)
