What do people think that the chances of future mystery flights from SYD going to HTI are? Or do you think they would deliberately choose different local for the next ones (shouod there be any)?

I personally don’t think that they would come back to the same place. Now that flights are opening up the need for QF to generate these extras are going away IMO

The mystery flights sold out super quickly, i still think they could sell more to promote under booked routes. Mystery flight is low risk in terms of being able to get $ back over a bunch of independent arrangements. Especially whilst international borders are closed.

We certainly got better and more timely reporting on AFF
You've got to love mainstream news reporting on airlines... The first photo is a QF A330 and they made reference that they thought they could have been going to Lord Howe Island.

Obviously, they didn't get the memo when booking that it'd be a ~2hr flight on a 737. In fact, the flight cost $737.

I bet you'll find they still don't meet their operational costs, when you consider all the time and effort spent on planning. They are doing it for the marketing value. Also, some of the costs for the inclusions will be met by others (e.g. Orange tourism council, Hamilton Island resorts, etc), as they benefit from the marketing/media too - but you can't do this too often.

Qantas may well have made money out of this (marketing value aside) as I believe there was heavy sponsorship involved with some of the activities, catering etc. I don't think the mystery flights are running at an operational loss. Yes, there is huge PR value as well.

Maybe the SYD-HTI flight is more marginal as it is much further than BNE-OAG (2x) and MEL-LST (3x), and are charging the same. But if they have sold out of the MEL-LST "mystery" flight and can't make money on it (given what they are charging), what hope do they have of making money anywhere on the network!

A QF mystery flight today was to Launceston. A bus with QF mystery flight dropped off people at the Harvest market and has just picked them up.

So it would appear they are repeating locations then. Might have to start paying more attention.

MEL (to LST) mystery flight was scheduled for today. So not repeating destinations.

Still think I might be somewhat disappointed in taking a mystery flight from Melbourne to Launceston, I mean could you get any closer? I guess the really special treats (like a day to Hamilton Island)) are reserved for Sydney. Qantas has always been about Sydney. I guess it’s the overall experience that counts, not the actual length of flight or destination.

Well Qantas is based in Sydney, its the biggest market and NSW the state least likely to have restrictions.

I think destination definitely counts, i would want it be somewhere i havent already been numerous times and to offer an experience that wouldnt be super easy to organise yourself.

The Syd-Hti looked fun (and better value), than a Syd-Mel or Syd-Bne would be. lve been to the capital cities (except Darwin) many many times and its really easy to find foodie experiences on your own in our capitals. I would think the sweet spot is regional.

Syd-hvb could be a winner, with a ferry trip to fraser island and back. Mel-bnk a likely winner too. What about Adl-ayq, mel-kgc, syd-lre (with tiein the qantas founders museum). Heaps of good options and tie ins possible.

Funny that they had to spoil the destination whilst still in the lounge as everyone would have needed to apply for a Tasmania border pass.
