This just in from ABT!

"Qantas will move to serving boxed dinners in September as part of an overhaul of catering for domestic economy flights. The new menu, developed in conjunction with one of the airline’s suppliers of business class meals, will offer a choice between a hot meal and a “substantial salad” for dinner on short-range and medium-range flights."

Qantas upgrades economy meals: bigger serves, boxed dinner packs - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

After boxed breakfasts, I suppose it had to happen that dinners were next on the hit list!

Recycling what Margaret Fulton did for Ansett many years ago. Didn't go down too well, IIRC.

I see that the

Who would that refer to, do you suppose? One of the catering kitchens at Mascot?

Has the ponytail given up?

And this is the spin nonsense that annoys me (on the elimination of trays):

“By getting the trays out of people’s way, we’re able give our customers more room to work and relax inflight” suggests Helen Gray, Qantas’ Head of Domestic Product and Service.

No, people won't get more room to work and relax until the time when you now clear the box debris out of people's way.

It will be a real improvement if you can also rest your ipad on the table while you eat. Impossible with a tray there.

The summer menu last year which included only one choice of boxed salad was a big fail IMO. It tasted ok but very boring to have the same dish every time and not really my idea of dinner.
Looks like this year a hot meal will also be offered so should be ok. I don't mind if it comes in a tray or in a box as long as it's a proper meal and not the same dish every time.

Qantas goes Maccas style for catering - its back to boxes

AIRLINE food is getting a Macca’s style makeover on Qantas domestic routes with economy class meals to be served in a box rather than on a tray from late next month.
The change is designed to speed up service and give travellers more room to dine and work on a laptop or tablet.
Despite the “fast food” look, Qantas has promised the meals will be 50 per cent larger than current tucker served in domestic economy and of a better standard.

Qantas head of domestic product and service Helen Gray said the changes meant “more choice, more food and even better quality”.
“By getting the trays out of people’s way, we’re able to give our customers more room to work and relax in-flight,” said Ms Gray.
“It will also speed things up so crew can spend more time providing a personalised service.”

Seems like a move to cut costs and fatten the traveler with larger portion sizes - will wait and see but I don't think I am optimistic about the change.

QF are so on the ball with this, it's actually a great multi platform project.

QFD can call them "Happy Meals"
QFI can call them "Formerly Happy Meals"
JQ can call them "unhappy meals" (which comes with the max bundle only)

Hot meals on short range dinner flights? does this count on the triangle?

I remember boxed meals when flying as family on RAAF aircraft, a lucky dip on the quality of products however i should expect no problems from Qantas. Maybe we could have a 'Try your luck' choice of boxes on arrival and through the flight wander around the aisles swapping meals, should get to meet new people!! Of course there would be restriction on heading straight to J.

I'm not convinced, but I guess I'll have to experience it first. Wasn't so impressed during the trial earlier this year.

This ought to be fun again.

Catering of food should never go to the lowest tender.

Tender... Food served in a box will not be tender. Oh, other tender. :)

On a serious note, if they had to choose between cutting catering and cutting safety, they made the right call IMHO.

The box is so you cannot see how empty the tray has become. QF catering must employ some 'artists' to see how they can spread the items around on the tray to make it look full. Also, like pizza boxes, the box can be easily made a little smaller once a year......
