Qantas iPhone check in

I was looking at a booking for tomorrow on my iphone today (using the Qantas app, not Safari) and noticed the check-in button.

I had heard about this feature coming but hadn't seen any emails about it. So I clicked it and it was pretty easy. Confirmed my mobile number and sent me an SMS with a link to the boarding pass.

My only problems are:
1) Can't change seat
2) Once checked in online (ie, not iphone) you can't then get an iphone boarding pass. After not being able to change my seat, I checked in online (for the same booking) and then attempted to check in on the iphone - but it wouldn't let me.
3) The SMS is a link which requires internet connection. If the phones internet goes down there goes your boarding pass.

Not an issue, but I'm going to feel like a cough holding up my iphone when entering the Qantas club.

Bring on the RF bag tags, that's going to be great. Not sure how the FF card as boarding pass is going to work. How will you remember your seat number?

Most likely you'll wave your card over a reader at the gate and then a receipt will get printed showing seat number and all that.

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

This worked fine for me today - only one issue was that when I clicked "see Boarding Pass" from within the app it said that the BP had expired. However when I got the sms and clicked the link - all was fine.

I am not sure if this is a dramatic new innovation or even how often I will use it - but additional functionality is always nice...

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

Thanks for the reminder;

Thought I should give it a go.

Checked in via Iphone and received the text message from Qantas with a web link to a boarding, now do I just put the Iphone under the scanner at the gate, why would you need a print out as the seat number is on the page.

Is there anything the Iphone can't do.

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

This worked well at boarding. I was officially the gate chicks first iphone boarding pass. You get a seat slip at the gate to evidence your seat.

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

I can't wait to be able to check in when I'm approaching -30 mins from boarding and stuck in traffic.

It shuts off 45min before hand...

And the point of still having a slip of paper is because CASA requires it...

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

Used it for the first time to Check in to come from TSV to SYD via BNE today, worked no problems at the gate, however wouldn't scan at the TSV QP.
Apparently first time the person at the check in counter, lounge and gate at TSV had seen it being used(my claim to fame.)

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

I did this ex-SYD on Friday and ex-BNE today, both gate operators got quite excited about it being their first.

It was fast and efficient and I'd highly recommend it. A number of other passengers asked me about it upon boarding (they must have seen me swipe my iphone at the gate) and the CSM came up to ask about my experience to provide feedback to management.

To be honest, I was surprised it actually worked, and worked so well. A nice innovation for those of use who are tech-savvy.

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

Oh, and don't hand over your phone - they've been instructed they are not to touch it :p

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

Heard an announcement about it in the terminal the other day, but didn’t use it, I know Bundy Bear might like to share his experiences of it though.

Not sure why you can’t change/select seats on the iPhone, as you can if you just browse to the normal site with the iPhone, so that’s a little annoying. They can’t claim it’s an iPhone limitation.

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

Yep; check in and then scanning the bar code with the Iphone worked really well.

Being a silver member you can select your cough seat when you make your booking but you can change to a better seat at T - 80, I selected a better seat at T-25, then at T - 23.45 I checked in with the Iphone.

At the international terminal they gave me a new boarding pass but I still used the Iphone before I boarded the flight.

With the Iphone you handle it yourself by putting it under the scanner, takes about 3 to 4 seconds to register then you get a little receipt.

Yep, I went to give her my phone and she told me she wasn't allowed to touch it. Unfortunately that must have been all she remembered of her training - she said I had to scan it it and pointed to the printer  ... after trying for about 2 seconds I told her I should try the barcode scanner - it worked.

Now you get a receipt though - I don't see the point. I may as well just use my FF card to scan at the gate. Would be a hell of a lot easier, and probably quicker. I guess it can't be too far away.

Re: Qantas iPhone check in

Likewise I would have thought checking in on any device would be the key, and then using your FF card at the gate to receive your ticket would be best. Why bother emailing on SMSing various things when we’ll all have a barcode soon enough.

Admittedly we don’t all have one now.

Suspect that'll be the idea once they get the RFID chips embedded in the FF cards.....

2D barcodes sent to web-enabled mobile devices.

A 2D barcode image is replacing paper boarding passes for domestic passengers using Qantas's new Mobile Check-in service.
Launched this week, the service allows passengers to check in via Qantas's mobile web portal between 24 hours and 45 minutes prior to departure.
Passengers receive an e-mail or SMS containing a 2D barcode image that is scanned at the boarding gate.
The service is available at airports including Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Canberra and Sydney Terminal 3, and will be deployed at Sydney Terminal 2, Adelaide, and Newcastle in the coming months.
