Qantas To Fly Seasonal Services Between Adelaide & Albury

In a bold move, Qantas is to flight test flights between Adelaide & Albury with seasonal services scheduled from July through to September.

Qantas is boosting its footprint in the New South Wales border city of Albury by launching seasonal services to Adelaide in July. Qantas will operate the services twice a week using QantasLink Dash 8-300 turboprops between July 8 and September 25. The nonstop flights promise to cut three hours off the current flying time and will see Qantas fly into Albury from four different capital cities.

Also opens up quite a large area for people to drive - Wagga and the NE of Victoria, providing parking at ABX isn’t extortionate

I think the population base is around 200,000 within around 2 hour drive (from memory). (I think I estimated it for the Bonza thread).

So ABX will have MEL, SYD, BNE, ADL and maybe MCY flights by year end?

I'm surprised one of the regionals hasn't attempted ABX-OOL yet, despite having the PE backed Bonza to MCY.

And here's a non-ET/AusBT/SimpleFlying tabloid source on the new Adelaide-Albury flights too.

And the official presser:

You're right, Australian ski resorts don't have the quality slopes and snow, are incredibly expensive, often require expensive car hire and don't have the economy of scale to compete.

Given all the mad keen dedicated skiers have been imprisoned in Australia for the last 2 years, where would you think they planning to go skiing next?

I took the comment to the effect that the Japanese, US and Canadian skifields don't compete for those wanting a skiing fix in the Australian winter months ....

They were struggling for numbers a month or so back but seem to have a decent stock supply now

Thanks - we experienced the same when flying out teams in a few months back - they had to car pool which in some cases wasn’t very practical. Thanks for the update.

This is another handy route to help with our logistics of moving people around. We are using the MEL and SYD ABX routes heavily already. The flights are always quite busy when we fly down, I think quite a few businesses are using them from what we hear.

Yeah, the brothers work fly out of there and WGA a fair bit but the direct to ADL will mean they switch a bit more over to ABX. For my personal travel ABX would probably save 35 minutes on a visit to family but lack of J product and a lounge means we would probably still use CBR

Per our observations (of being quite full) seems like this route has done well and is now being expanded.

Qantas announces seasonal Albury-Adelaide service has been extended to year-round flight route

Huge community demand has prompted Qantas to operate its new Albury-Adelaide service all year round. QantasLink chief executive John Gissing said the growing demand had given the airline confidence to extend.

"These additional flights mean customers from the Border region will have easier access to Adelaide and its surrounds over the warmer months, whether they're travelling to see family and friends or going on holiday," he said.
"We've also seen growing demand from South Australians looking to explore Albury-Wodonga and the high country and Riverina regions, which we think will continue to grow.
