Qantas / Jetstar REMOVE domestic fuel surcharges

Yes, that may well be, Dave.

Given they have gone to the time and trouble of changing the points (eg. from 6,000 to 5,500) the same amount of effort could have set up more realistic payment levy in numbers of points (1,500 was sugested above).

That change was done as part of the reduction to $18 in fuel surcharge. They haven't made another change with the removal of the surcharge. Maybe they will remove the pay with points option in due course.

Fantastic news. Hopefully we will never see fuel surcharges ever again....

When the economy turns, no doubt oil will go up, and fuel surcharges will also.

Wouldn't put my house on that one unfortunately.
I wouldn't either but you never know. Next time they may just opt to increase airfares instead of introducing fuel surcharges all over again. Who knows? We can only live in hope....

So, if I'm doing my sums correctly, what is now a $82 one-way sale-fare from Sydney to Melbourne (on the current sale for departures 13 Jan to 07 Apr, book n pay by 5 Jan 09) should fall to $64 for bookings made from the 1st of January 2009? (after the $18 surcharge is removed). Pretty good for MEL!

Let's wait and see :)

Qantas have just released a sale (valid 1 Feb - 31 March) where the airfares are higher than the $82 special offer (above - sale finished 5/1/09) which had the full $18 fuel surcharge embedded.

So...
With fuel surcharge SYD - MEL - $82 (sale fare)
Without fuel surcharge SYD - MEL - $85 (sale fare)

"what's up is down and what's down is up"

Interesting to say the least

Yep seems fares have just gone up quite a bit to incorporate the fuel surcharge. With the surcharges I was paying (as a lead in fare) $144 ROK-SYD via BNE. Now the lead in fare is $151 with the base fare just a lot higher than before.

Interestingly, forward bookings must be pretty good because I can't even get the lead in fare on all the dates I want in June & July.

And yet with the fare increase without surcharge they offer a promo on classic awards and earn no YQ.
Swings and roundabouts.

Not that long ago a one-way airfare SYD-BNE was $128 and now it is $99. I think that is a very good saving.

I would not see a problem if Qantas decided to increase that airfare tomorrow to $128 again but I would be extremely disappointed if Qantas introduced a $29 fuel surcharge on top of the current $99 airfare....

Ditto! Much better IMHO to have a high fare without a fuel surcharge, than an artificially low fare with a fuel surcharge.

JQ have slapped an extra $10 on their "All Day Everyday Low Fares" for some reason. After they took the $20 fuel surcharge went off, they took $20 off their Normal Fares, yet I browse today and all domestic routes are now $10 higher...

AVV-SYD was $59, now its $69... MEL-OOL was $69 now $79.

At least Virgin showed guts and removed it at once, and have not raised fares since. DJ are now cheaper than JQ on some routes, and most sectors are around the same price now.
