Strangely enough, Qantas' marketing dept didn't make a song and dance about the airline jacking up excess baggage charges

Qantas is quietly lifting the amount it slugs passengers for excess baggage by 75 per cent.

The airline has been charging passengers who exceed their checked baggage allowance $40 for their first extra piece of luggage and $60 for each subsequent piece.

But on Friday, Qantas will increase that to $70 for the first excess piece of luggage – a 75 per cent increase – and $90 for each additional piece.
The "heavy charge" that is levied for single items weighing over 23 kilograms has jumped from $30 to $50 and pre-purchasing an extra piece of luggage on domestic flights has been increased from $30 to $35.

Damn, there goes what little overhead locker space that was left. Police this then they will get revenue down in the hold

Ouch! Tell us about it! I dropped off my mother at Bundaberg for the last time this morning - the excess baggage on the 3rd and fourth items were $90 and $70. Travelling on J via BNE to DRW, moving for work so do not normally carry so many bags. The additional cost will be reclaimed through work - but for those that do not have this luxury - consider yourself warned. The customer service agent was a contractor not a QF employee, applying the letter to the law in this instance. He did advise us that charges for excess baggage had gone up this morning, so he was on the ball. I overheard another business suit customer that was going to be charged for being 1.7kg over the weight limit, he decided to take his hideously overweight luggage onboard, good luck with that! Aircraft was Dash 300. Well done Qantas on the tiger attack strike lol you well and truly snared your prey this morning, worthy of Sir David Attenbrough commentary. Oh well. The drive to BNE airport is only 4 hours and the roads are great. Just watch out for the Tigers lurking in the sugar cane fields surrounding Bundy!

Forgot to add context; forwarded corporate business QF's way in September with work staff trip of 12 people to Hawaii, flew to Darwin in past fortnight and then again today. Scratched their back and QF gouged ours! Where's the love ha ha

The article implies that this is for domestic passengers only, as I assume international excess baggage fees are already super high.

Many of us never pay these fees, but the 'heavy' charge for in excess of 23 kilograms even when one is 'entitled' to that is nasty, if I am reading it correctly.

I'm more offended by the grammar in this article. There's no such thing as 'pre-purchase', it's just 'purchase'. Same for 'pre-booking'. Ugh.

No, if you're flying in J or your status entitles you to 32 kg per piece of luggage you're not charged the "heavy" charge.
Basically anyone with silver or above is exempt from this on however many items they're entitled to carry.
This particular heavy charge is only an issue for domestic flights although there is a $75 heavy charge on flights to or from America which remains unchanged.
