Qantas International Catering Singapore To Brisbane

Argh! the dreaded cheese and crackers available on virtually every Qantas flight, domestic and presumably international of any length.

I had sent my complaint to Qantas for a very poor meal offering in business class on the flight from Singapore to Melbourne last year. It looks as though things haven't improved. I think Neil Perry may have to rethink his association with Qantas. They are giving him a bad reputation; food quality on the airline is probably out of his control.

I've not flown Qantas internationally except NZ-OZ. The food there is not too bad!

I have mostly EK which is not bad.

But… they’re actually really good! They come with salted rice crackers… which I prefer to dry crackers. The strength is ‘tasty’, and delivers. Unlike the VA counterpart that although marked ‘tasty’, is more ‘mild’ and bland.

I've had a few and expect more. The are OK but not my kind of Tasty which is NZ Mainland, crumbly and tangy! I also like the ones which come with salami as well.

I mean, my only recent QF Y flight was out of SYD to CGK- ie from their home base- and the food was inedible. Luckily it was a day flight and I’d filled up in the lounge, otherwise I would have been more annoyed

I truly think the underlying theme here is that qantas has (cut costs) dropped the ball in catering. International economy is laughable quality, bamboo sticks in cardboard boxes. I’ve done 4 asia business returns in the last 3 months and even they are such a poor standard that having run out of points it’s back to Cathay for me.

Had a similar poor experience QF economy Singapore Brisbane about 3 years ago. Was barely what you’d get on a 2hr domestic flight at dinner time. Seem to recall it was just a soggy croissant in a plastic bag for breakfast. Thought maybe they were still getting up to speed after covid and gave feedback in a post flight survey at the time but that doesn’t seem to have had much effect! Was a come down from BA premium economy on previous sector from London, although fare was a bit cheaper with final leg in Y. (Still hard to get premium economy out of Brisbane to Europe.) Staff in Singapore QF lounge a bit haughty too, insisting on seeing my physical qantas Club card even though it was noted on my boarding pass. Why go digital if you’re not going to recognise it?

On the late meals issue, I still like it just for the ritual, especially long flights. Did QF premium economy Vancouver Sydney in early 2023 which was nice food, except upon enquiring about pre-dinner drinks was gruffly told they wouldn’t be served because “its late and everybody wants to get to sleep”! If I’d had the chance to answer before said attendant quickly walked off I would’ve said well, actually, it’s a 13 hr flight, I think we have plenty of time to have a sleep later, and if you’re not going to serve them why is it on the inflight menu?

Latest trip was to Europe on Qatar, very good economy service, a bit like Qantas used to be before all the cost cutting. 😆

"It's late and everyone just wants to go to sleep"
Funny that! That's what they told me too. It must be the standard excuse on all their flights back into Australia, even though the flight left Singapore at 7.40pm, or was it 8.40? I can't remember. All I can remember is the poor offering for dinner.

Your FF number is not usually on your boarding pass these days so if you use a different lounge to your carrier they may want to see your FF number. Only your status with your parent airline shows.

I get this every time when I use the EK lounge at SYD INT and flying QF. The digital card works for that.

I think it’s after 830pm that meal services become ‘express’? So no separate bar in business and economy, and no entree for business class… straight to mains.

As someone said above, they just want to get on board and try and get some sleep. It’s a tough choice for an airline. What is the demand for a separate bar service at 930pm, then waiting for dinner?

The one thing is that you’ll never go hungry on qantas… flew economy SYD-HKG a couple weeks ago. We had bar service with snacks, then lunch with cheese and crackers and garlic bread, then tim tams with tea and coffee, then bulla ice cream, then at least two movie snack services with nuts and cookies, then another round of bulla ice creams, then the pre-arrival snack! Most people around me seemed to be handing back empty trays!

I wish my meal had looked like that…I would have been happy 😊

I find it really hard to sleep sitting upright… harder when there’s lots of activity going on around you… people eating, clutching the back of your seat as they get up to go to the WC, or poke their IFE screens.

So I’ll go with the flow, and take anything offered to help pass the time :)

What i tend to do is just get a drink, maybe a snack or desert when they do the service and settle into more wind down routine on a flight out of Singapore. (If it was J I would be attempting to go 3/4 lie flat prepare for bed immediately after seatbelt signs are off).
As soon as they're done, I try to go to bed.
