Qantas Green frequent flyer tier

I suspect someone (individual, greenie org, competitor) may have initiated legal action to question the veracity of the offset claims made based on one size fits all. The carbon emissions of any flight are affected by load and aircraft type not just route

While I agree that each flight will have different CO2 emissions based on load and exact route flown, the CO2 calculation for all airlines is done by IATA rather than the airline itself. From what I understand aircraft type is factored into IATA's equation although a last minute swap would render that irrelevant.

Wonder why the word offset is being cancelled.
It was never really an "offset" in relation to the general meaning of the word in this context.

I note that the word offset has disappeared from the option when booking flights.

The payment is now referred to as "Voluntary Carbon Program".

A more accurate wording.

Hardly offsetting your entire flight for a close to a gold coin or 2 donation.

I offset a MEL-SYD at time of booking (as it's always 50/50 whether it'll work retrospectively), that's appeared. So two to go. The donation is usually one, and the offset the other...now I need to rethink.

Yep, TAS used to be $15 originally though :(
Yep, my first one was that, then $20 and last one $50.

Always posts automatically when I pay the offset with $ at the same time as booking SYD-MEL.

I also get a seperate points for the offset.

I'm def going to do the cash at time of booking going forward for that one, all my other options were long haul and wanted thousands of points vs $2.80 this way.

I'm a little irritated about the lack of notice given to their ending the offset option - I'd four leafs and was waiting until July 1st to pull the trigger on the fifth.

Now the sunk cost fallacy has crept in - have already had my first RecycleSmart collection, with two more this month booked to close out and get my 50 SC before my anniversary. This will probably be my last year - I don't mind them 'upping' the cost so to speak (compared to the holiday home offset), rather it's considerably more time and effort to achieve (unless you either routinely book their eco-hotels or happen to have a good Red Energy rate).

Hmmm. I was going to do climate positive delivery as one of my remaining leaves to retain Green Tier.

Now it doesn’t seem worth getting Green Tier even though I already have 3 of the 5 leaves. 1 of the 2 leaves I was going to get is no longer available.

Edit: I guess maybe I’ll get some wine, but will need to rethink whether items still worth it for next year.

Wine with a green leaf is the same category - if that helps?

I am glad I didn't bother pursuing Green Tier this year. I don't need the status credits (have Lifetime Gold and unlikely to reach Platinum again) and the 10K points does not count towards Points Club. So I can spend about 8K to earn 10K points and decided that was not worth the hassle of dealing with the broken processes for leaf delivery.

I wonder whether Qantas are contemplating wrapping up Green tier. It certainly seems neglected. Of the six categories:
  • flying often doesn't work properly unless done at checkout
  • carbon offsets for homes have been removed meaning you have to sign up for power, solar or recycling (which is likely to be expensive given that 3 recycling pickups are needed)
  • the quizzes don't work properly (although at least this leaf rolls over it seems), and
  • the list of eco hotels doesn't seem to have been updated for ages (and is an expensive way to earn a leaf).
This does not point to much effort being given over to maintaining it. (I got my 50SC this year, enabling me to hit SG for the first time, but am not budgeting on getting green tier next year. To get the extra 50SCs, I'd rather spend the cash on a fun status run/holiday somewhere when DSCs are on.)
