i recently completed my status run to retain gold, and my husband will do the same in the next coule of month.
however due to unforseen circumstances that wont be made public for 12 weeks :D we have decided we wil most likely totally wind back our self funded /points travel for the next year. (husband upset because he has enough points to fly virgin east to west one way for two, and then return either with AA points or QF points)
As a result we wont retain gold.
my thoughts/question..... when we fly we 90% of the time fly j when j is available
we have been taking family, that take us to the airport, into the lounge when flying y or j because we are gold.

so back to my thoughts/question, if we almost always fly j
what is our reason to stay gold
points???
when we can purchase AA points and they get us further within australia then QFF points (we do not plan outside oz tarvel during the next three years)

what are the gold things we are truly going to miss out on

If I'm reading between the lines correctly you'll have a lot more joy in your life than a visit to the Qantas Club. Congratulations Candyb.

if you're paying cash for J fares you won't miss out on much if you lose SG. There'll be some points from the status bonus. But checkin, QP access, baggage allowance and customer service should all be the same.

I can't answer you AA question, sorry.

A friend found herself in similar "unforseen circumstances". The outcome occurred over 12 months ago and Qantas have extended her Gold status until 2016.

I suspect your situation is very similar to many people. And I think there are two ways to view it:

1.- Strictly rationally - it is NOT worth wasting time and money chasing status to retain gold. You get all (?) the benefits anyway flying J, and even if you do fly Y sometimes, then it would almost certainly cost less to pay for lounge access than earn it via extra status runs.

2.- If you are an avid ¨frequent flyer¨, the pleasure you get from flying, researching good deals, and finding amazing ways to reach that wonderful goal of STATUS, easily makes it worth it no matter the time nor money!!!!!

Unfortunately I fell into the latter option years ago, and will only ever go down fighting to my last breath!

Being self funded now I had soft landing to SG recently, not concerned about keeping status or chasing it these days as we travel in J anyway OS, we use (purchased) US miles at near one third the ticket buy price and rack up big QF points in various ways PA too, therefore we receive the J benefits anyway.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
