An unarmed man who had threatened suicide Wednesday morning locked himself in the coughpit of an unoccupied plane at Metro Airport until surrendering more than three hours later, authorities said.
Andrew Alessi, 37, of Baton Rouge, purchased a plane ticket about 11:30 a.m., went through airport security and then pushed past a gate agent and ran down the jet bridge of American Eagle flight 2795 bound for Dallas-Fort Worth, said Anthony Williams, chief of Metro Airport Police.
A gate agent at the rear of the plane, who was making a last-minute security check and looking for personal items that passengers might have left behind, tried to restrain Alessi but Alessi got into the coughpit and locked the bulletproof door, Williams said

I suspect that they believed the alternative aircraft would be fixed on time. There could be any number if reasons why they switched, the least likely of which is that they like Mildura over Launceston.

QLK have a crew base in MQL and if the delay would have involved them being stuck away from base in MEL and therefore impacting the next days schedules then I can see why they'd make a swap like that.

However, I will agree that and airline should not simply quote T&C's which basically say they can get away with anything and not do a thing to compensate a customer when they make a decision that simply saves them time and money. I've been on the receiving end of QF making a last minute decision to cancel and abandon a small number of pax as it would have been too expensive to sort them out and it certainly was offensive when they said "stiff, read the T&C's" and left me hundreds out of pocket.

Life is tough in the airline game unfortunately, and generally it's the pax who lose out.

This happened to me a year or so ago. Flying (I think) SYD-TMW (or could have been SYD-DBO). Flight called, we boarded and suddenly had to disembark. When we got back into the terminal, I asked the ground staff "what 'appened?". She said that the plane about to leave SYD-Lord Howe had a blocked toilet, couldn't be quickly fixed, so they replaced it with our plane, as a much longer flight.

All pax sat patiently for a while, and the ground staff FA warned us that no toilet facilities on the plane. We boarded again on new plane, the ground staff lady came on board, thanked us all for being so nice about the change, we gave her a cheer, and we were away. Bushies don't winge.

I've flown on Dash 8s heaps of times, and the only time there has been a problem due to mechanical issues.
