Qantas frequent flyer float plan put on ice

Qantas Airways will formally shelve plans for a partial float of its $2.5 billion loyalty business next week, ending months of speculation about whether the airline will reduce ties with one its most profitable businesses.

It is understood management will tell the board it does not want to pursue a partial float or trade sale of Qantas Loyalty after examining the option for the past nine months.

The decision is expected to be *supported by the board, which will meet next week ahead of the airline’s annual results release next Thursday.

It was interesting to see that "flights still account for about 80 per cent of redemptions for qantas loyalty". Seems those toasters aren't really flying off the shelves :p

Yes - I found that quite interesting as well, you can simplify the AFR article to this:

Qantas: "Hey do you want to pay over the odds for a non-controlling interest in a QFF spin-off that is inextricably linked to our failing management?"

Market: [insert sound of crickets here]

Heh!

But clearly the money spent in the marketing dept. will turn this in into a positive spin for the qff program.

We need some discount toasters :!:

May be we could use these discount toaster on J* flights to make our own toasties when we depart from Syd T2 where there is no longer a QF lounge ... that way we bring some of that QF lounge spirit with us

I see they are still as yet undecided about the entire separation of Qantas Domestic and Qantas International into 2 business units and AOC's. Whats the saying again? Poop or get off the pot.

The AFR only mentioned that the management recommendation to the Board was not to sell.
Until Board determined there is no decision.

I tend to agree however that the value of QFF and QFi are inextricably linked (after all who gets excited about redeeming a SYD-MEL flight) so whilst QFi is haemmoraging and there are frankly questions about its long-term future, no-one would be investing in QFF

No partial float, no partial sale, "put on ice"... does that mean they still/can still pull this rabbit out of their hats down the track?
Put on ice to me, means that its not totally off consideration, ie, put aside for now, but later... who knows?
Would they still consider selling the whole kit and caboodle in say, 12/24 months time?

Potentially, see the first part of moa999's post above.

Imagine the rate of "enhancements" after any sale, partial or otherwise

Yeah at that point it would be over for the FF program as the heavy earners would then drift away.
Also all the licensing with credit cards would become worthless.

Maybe their research has shown that there would be further desertions.

FWIW Just noticed 43 viewers on QFF 54 veiwers on Velocity. Is this a sign?

Agree with the first para, disagree with the second.

As I understand it, QFF makes it's money largely by selling points to third parties, such as Woolies, who give to their customers, who then try to use them. QFFers are a commodity, populating the QFF database, to be wheeled out to potential buyers of points as a large marketing base. As long as QF continues to restrict the number of Award or Upgrade seats on QFi flights, the success or otherwise of QFF is largely independent if QFi. Strictly speaking, QFF should be a decent spin off proposal, not that I'd ever want it to happen. You only have to look at Aeroplan to see what happens to actual flyers when these things go native.

Might as well sell the whole kit to MacDonalds/McDonalds/Maccas
Their box type of tucker/food will be appearing in QFd Y soon.
Might as well sell it to them for a "quarter pounder would you like to upsize that"...
