This is where anyseat falls down - sometime the anyseat is as cheap as the classic award - but I have yet to see one that is cheaper..

After having a look at various combinations I think that AnySeat has a floor set to the number of points required for Classic. Certainly when you try a points + pay option, it seems the minimum number of points you can't go under is the same as the points required for the Classic.

I know this is a tangential bump but I was just exploring the AAnytime awards that AA has. Just looking at flights next year HNL-LHR (I am planning to go to the UK late next year and am just messing around with points planning) and their system had no J available HNL-LHR but did have aanytime J at "only" double the points cost - I may need to scroung up more points...

From an article in The Australian today -

Qantas looking at burn-as-you-earn loyalty program | The Australian

There are a few interesting points about using points inflight to redeem for toasters etc. Hopefully they will improve on their delivery service as a few here have had lots of problems.

However, the most interesting thing for me and certainly something I didn't know was -

"When there's a sale fare with Qantas, you can go into Any Seat first and have a look because it should be reflected in the program," he says.

"So the two-for-one sale reduced Any Seat back to Classic inventory levels for all of the inventory. It was a very good time to go looking in Any Seat through that promotion period."

I never thought of that but it makes sense. Something for all of us to consider for future sales & future redemptions.

Yes but when this happens the cents/point ratio plummet, as there is a floor on the Anyseat redemption at the Classic Award level, unlike for example DJ who for example make seats available for as low as couple of thousand points on some domestic flights during sales. Qantas, can reduce a fare to $20 + taxes (eg MEL-ADL at the moment) but you don't see the points requirement going less than 8,000 pts + taxes. Correct me someone if I am wrong please (and I hope I am)!

Also I love this quote about direct sweep ...

Hickey argues that members benefit too.

"It means you know where you stand -- it goes directly into your QFF account and you don't have to ring up and get them to transfer the points and go through that rigmarole," he says.

Yes the benefit is just fantastic. Another plus is that you don't have bother with the whole rigmarole of seeing if you can get award seats on other programs for less points either. Like me a few weeks ago, it was such a pain having to check both SQ and QF for flights to MEL-HKG to bring my partner up. It would have been much easier for me if I could have just booked that anyseat award for 50,000 pts in economy oneway on QF when instead I had to go through the rigmarole of finding a 38,750 pt award one way on SQ in business class.;)

Yes I think that you are correct on this. However, my point of interest is the increased availability of say J seats at a Classic Rate. So technically, any J seat on sale would now be available at the Classic Rate instead of their standard X seats/flight.

So if you were going to go SYD-LHR in J over the sale period using points OR if you wanted to take a family of 4 in J, it should be much easier to find your seat(s).

sorry .. but LOL :D:D:D ....

I think you'll find that this applies to economy but not business class. At the moment there is a sale on for MEL-SIN rtn J. The anytime award rates have come down - now it is only 400,000 per seat return or thereabouts. And some classic award availability but not correlated to the sale at all.

The QF 2-4-1 sale did include J so maybe my wishful thinking had me thinking about J as well based on the comments in the article.
