Qantas fined $20m for price fixing cartel

QANTAS has agreed to pay $20m to settle the Australian liability for its involvement in an international freight price fixing cartel.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission announced today that it had launched separate Federal Court actions against Qantas and British Airways for their involvement in a scheme to fix cargo fuel surcharges between 2002 and 2006, The Australian reported.

Answers part of my question i posed about this in another thread the other day.

Now we wait for the Class action by the customers who were ripped off. I expect this will be more than $20m.

I have always wondered if this sort of conduct occurred with freight, did it also occur with fuel fines for passengers? How about air fares in general?

I used to send a lot of stuff with TNT back in the late 90s and they had fuel surcharges even then!

Not sure whether this one will be resolved any time soon. In my opinion QF and other airlines should be fined for price-fixing fuel surcharges not only for cargo but for passenger services as well....

The US Justice Dept (O'Connor, Anti-trust Division) & FBI circa June 08 announced they were looking into fuel surcharges.

They were also looking at passenger fares if I recall. Maybe the ACCC will get a free ride on the work of others.

More recently they were looking into a card's surcharges too. Hmmm.

In these types of matters the ACCC appears powerless.

The airlines should have been hauled in over fuel surcharges a long time ago and not only for price-fixing but for blatant misleading advertising of airfares....

Except that the evidence so far has only supported the case against them in the cargo area. I am not aware that the same cartel behaviour has been shown with respect to surcharges on passengers.

The evidence is there all they need is to look in the right places or get a helping hand from someone. It is not that long ago since the BA and Virgin Atlantic fiasco. From memory BA were fined heavily and had to repay fuel surcharges to passengers who flew over a period of 2 years....

QANTAS has pleaded guilty to price-fixing charges on air cargo shipped from Canada and has been fined $C155,000 ($167,822), Canada's Competition Bureau said today.


Qantas admitted that its freight division fixed surcharges on air cargo exported on certain routes from Canada between May 2002 and February 2006, the bureau said in a news release, The Associated Press (AP) reported.
