Qantas today has confirmed that the times meals are served are being extended:

We're serious about food at Qantas. Our cuisine is inspired by Neil Perry from Sydney's award winning Rockpool restaurant, and we are constantly innovating to create better quality inflight menus with more choice and variety than ever before.

Qantas customers travelling in Economy will now be offered more choice and greater value with the extension of main meal times across our short and medium domestic sectors.

  • Breakfast is served for an extra 30 minutes for departures up until 0859
  • Lunch now starts an hour earlier for departures commencing from 1100
  • Dinner now starts an hour earlier for departures commencing from 1700

That means even more of your customers can now enjoy a main meal service in Economy when travelling on Qantas within Australia.

Some of our other exciting new initiatives we've been working on and introduced for Domestic travellers are:
  • Hot and cold gourmet dinner boxes offering customers a choice and up to 50% larger portions to Economy customers travelling on short and medium flights.
  • Fresh fish of the day in Business - as we bring restaurant style experiences to the sky.
  • coughtail Hour in our Business lounges daily
  • Hot breakfasts available daily in our Qantas Clubs

Re: More Time to Dine

Ah... I even did a search to see if a thread had already been started and found nothing... Oh well.

Re: Qantas extends meal times

I'll have to say, that this news of the extended meals times on domestic sectors is certainly a good call by QF & would be warmly appreciated by customers on those 11am & 5pm flights who would have been previously offered a snack & now a meal is offered Instead.
Good call QF:)

Qantas extends meal times

I think it may have already started. Last week MrP took a flight expecting a snack so packed weetbix because by the time he collected luggage and got a taxi, checked in to the hotel, ordered Room Service etc it would be too late with an early start to work the next day. He was delighted he received a meal and weetbix saved for another time.

Re: Qantas extends meal times

Hmmmm will be interesting to see how this plays out in practice. Personally, I hate meal times on planes when travelling economy due to the aisles being clogged etc.
I'd prefer it if they just had a substantial snack option available that could be requested any time.

Re: Qantas extends meal times

Annoying that it still doesn't cover breakfast and dinner for the OOL flights :(

Yeah, its a shame when people have to eat.

Got nothing against people eating but I meal times are frustrating as the food is either terrible, or it's right when you need to go and use the bathroom....but the aisles are blocked!

That's interesting, as the 17:40 OOL-SYD departure (during DST) *did always* receive dinner, even though the timetable advertised "Refreshment". I always figured that it was because it was 18:40 Sydney time (which is the departure time of QF865 during non-DST months).

Re: Qantas extends meal times

I wonder when the QF online timetable will start to show the correct meal service for departures in the extended time periods? Departures from SYD between 17:00 and 17:59 are still showing "refreshment".

Re: Qantas extends meal times

Was just on Adl-Asp flight on the weekend, departing 11.20am. Was expecting lunch as per recent announcement, but alas, still cold defrosted cookie. Just one thing that made for a very poor flight. Despite being a WP on a lightly loaded (about half full), with no J passengers at all, I was in seat 4F with partner in 4D. No greeting by any staff member on board, no welcome by CSM, name not used at all through flight, and then forgot to ask my partner if she would like a drink. Big contrast to the return trip on the way home, with CSM welcoming us on board, bringing us drinks in real glasses before J class received their drinks, and he even came up and had another chat before landing. Lunch on the way back was a pumpkin and feta quiche, which was very nice. I understand that none of the above are published benefits, but as the only WP (I suspect) on the flight, it showed just how good some CSMs can be, and how poor (or should that be lazy) others can be.

Was wondering the same thing.. Have a flight booked departing SYD at exactly 1700 and still marked as snack.

Oh well, insignificant problem ..

Re: Qantas extends meal times

Seems they have now updated the timetable to correctly show DINNER on flights after 5pm as advertised. I got a My Flights app alert today and it shows the change from REFRESHMENT to DINNER for my post-5pm SYD-BNE flight next week.

Re: Qantas extends meal times

About 15 months later there seems to have been a contraction of meal times, at least for dinner. I've been taking QF783 fairly regularly this year, Departure time from SYD has varied between 19:40 and 20:05. The flight is sold as a Dinner flight and My Flights is still showing this as a dinner flight. However, the last couple of times I've take QF783 I've been offered a snack. When is dinner not dinner, when they load a snack.

Dinner in both Buisness and Economy have been aligned. It is for departures between 1730 and 2000.

When did the Economy dinner time revert back to 17:30? The point of this thread was the advertise that Economy dinner meals times were being brought forward to 17:00, and this, less than 16 months ago. Has this been reversed?

Must be Money $ related ??

That might be the true.
The issue is it was sold to me as a dinner flight not a snack flight. In some cases I've paid more for the earlier flight, over QF785, based on a range of factors including that it is supposed to be (read advertised as) a dinner flight. QF785 departs only 30 minutes later and delays on the operating aircraft for QF783 means it can arrive less than 10 minutes before QF785. So there is no significant time saving.
