I seriously think its the price, from business return being somewhere between 600-1000 out of pocket to same with EK being circa $3400-3500 when there is still some of the old school business floating around aswell, imagine paying 3500 and a shed load of points and sitting in 2-3-2

I know… but i was semi-considering actually paying the EK surcharge!! I’m already paying $500 or whatever one way, an extra $1200 doesn’t seem *that bad* for a through flight with minimal disruptions. And a through fare is usually a fair bit cheaper than mixing carriers, so that off sets some points cost.

This happened to us out of GLA in a few weeks due to the a380 swap. Cancelled free and managed to find 2 CR J on BA to SIN. Still not the cheapest reward, however we do avoid the middle east now, and the inferior product.

my ideal airport is newcastle in the uk which uses 2-3-2 exclusively, maddening.

On our recent trip I booked 4 pax + infant from Zurich to Melbourne at ~700k points and $7000. That certainly stung, but it was a once in a lifetime opportunity with my partners parents who had never flown J so it was worth it to me.

On some other routes though it's only marginally cheaper than a cash J by the time you assign a value to the points.

I think the run of the mill points churner is chasing value over a discounted premium experience and you're not getting the former with EK anymore.
