Qantas Emergency Exit Seats

I had seat 26K exit row on VAUSTRALIA 777 last year LAX-SYD.Found it quite good.very little loitering around toilets.Got plenty of sleep.That was just my experience , others flights may not be so lucky.

Remember, you are not allowed to loiter around the bathrooms on the way to the USA!!! Maybe the VA passengers took notice of the announcement

Had the exit row in J class on a 747 (on points, no extra charge) from LA to Bris. a couple of months ago. Excellent. Had the seat reclined to the near flat bed and still had a large gap between it and the two crew seats in front of us. Crew only needed to use them twice for take off and landing in 14 hours.

Just got off QF94 from LAX in 66K (or was it J - the Window seat!) and slept like a log for over 8 hours. No one bumped my feet and has no issues at all. Also GREAT CREW and overall another very good flight.

Last June my wife and I flew SYD>SIN>FRA and LON>SIN>MEL with QANTAS on a 747-400 each way. Having paid for the tickets with QFF points, we chose to buy Exit row seats, near the galley on the first leg and near toilets on return leg. Extra leg room was good. I was a little miffed when other Y class passengers jumped into vacant Exit Row seats just after take-off, given the $$ we had paid.

I agree with comments from others above:
. the exit doors are drafty (by design apparently) so a blanket or two is needed to keep warm
. the noise in the galley, the light from the galley curtains constantly opening, and having to dodge trolleys, especially in the aisle seat, can affect your rest/sleep.
. yes, getting trodden on, either by cabin crew near the galley, or by passengers when near the toilets, is a problem. We bought the ER seats so we could stretch out but people (crew/passengers) keep wanting to stand where your feet are.

Overall, I think we had a better flight than without ER seats but it will be personal choice if you want to pay the extra.

I'm flying MEL > SGP > LON > JPN (Narita) > Syd > Melbourne

Most flights I'm trying to get emergency exit seats. Anyone flown in them? I've paid extra for the Mel > Sgp and Narita > Syd.

Any insights would be great

Hi Jim,
all our family members are well over 6 foot tall and we used Y exit seats many times. While there is oddles of legroom on long haul flights people stand in that area while waiting to get into the toilets or just to stretch their legs. It can get noisy and at night time the lights from the galley or toilets can be a nuisance. You will not be allowed to place an onboard case in front of you as a leg rest as it blocks the exit in case of emergency. There usually is no window to look out. The seats are narrower because the table is stored in the armrest, so beware if you are a larger size. The biggest advantage probably is that you can get up and move around easily whenever you feel like it.

We are in ER seats 58b and 58c on QF108 from LAX to SYD. I am 6.4 so leg room is important but has anyone got an opinion on what these seats are like. It appears close to the galley but not any toilets, is this correct?

As I have some exit row seats booked I would be interested in some ideas that would dissuade people jumping into a vacant seat next to me.

Maybe eating something smelly and insisting on a conversation, peanuts come to mind. They spray when you talk as well.

Ipecac on the sleeve on the offending side might do the trick as well.

Is there something that could be put on the seat that people would be hesitant to go near? Fake spew maybe.

I am sure there are some good ideas out there.

Yes, near the galley but not the loos. I found the noise and light from the galley to be a bit of a pain, but there was no loitering of passengers in the space. Even with those disturbances I found the seats to be worth the extra cost.

I was on QF32 SIN-SYD yesterday and they were charging for exit row seats even at check-in!

From the looks of it there weren't too many takers given that 3 out of 6 exit row seats in the middle Y cabin (Row 66 on the A380) remained unoccupied.

Understand that many airlines charge for advance reservation of these seats but it's the first time I've come across this at the check-in counter.

There is no charge for exit row seats in J, only whY. On the 744 there is no charge in whY for exit window seats eg 58A, 58K due to the exit door invading the leg space.

How about a book & a pair of glasses giving the impression that there is an occupant of the seat that is just stretching their legs. Or you could always byo laminated sign saying 'reserved' or 'not for use'.

Wonder if anyone can share some insight into the availability of Qantas exit row seat availability online , that is without having to go through with the booking and realising all the exit row seats are Sold !
Ive done it over the phone before, but wondered if there was a way of seeing what was available online
