Hi Guys,

I'm flying MEL > SGP > LON > JPN (Narita) > Syd > Melbourne

Most flights I'm trying to get emergency exit seats. Anyone flown in them? I've paid extra for the Mel > Sgp and Narita > Syd.

Any insights would be great

Emergency exits in Y pretty much suck.

Expect crowds standing on your toes....

SIN - Singapore
NRT - Narita
LHR - London Heathrow

FWIW (for what it's worth) - get away from exit rows and find a side seat forward, or a bulk head behind - in my experience of Y travel, I would rate say a bulkhead (behind) far higher than an E XR.

Anyway - enjoy your flights

You’ll get extra legroom but most emergency exits are either near the galley, so can be noisy, or the toilets, so can be popular for foot traffic. You may get bumped into, run over by the trolley and a little cold ;) :p

You should be able to stretch your legs out though. So that’s a plus.

It also depends on the type plane you are flying in. If you can tell us what types of plane you will be flying then you might get some better suggestions about the best seats to pick. There are a couple of different planes (and some different layouts) you could get on those routes.

Hi,

I am flying on the A380 with Qantas. I've already paid for the emergency exit seats with Qantas but with BA I can't prebook the seats. I'm sitting in 79K I think if I remember correctly. I just rung Qantas all the other Bulk head seats are taken! I'll just bring my Dr Dres and hope for the best!

FWIW, on the QF 388's if you are prepared to pay for exit seats, 66A/K rock!

Other than that I swear by the OG White Socks[SUP]®[/SUP] exit row methodology.

To expand on serfty's post, he and another poster swear by wearing white socks (no shoes) when in exit rows...stops your feet being trodden on by any people milling around waiting for the loos. I've not had the opportunity to try it but it sounds perfectly plausible. :)

I've used it. Does seem to help.

If white socks are good, maybe these are better

Nah, that'd keep you awake ...

What happens in the darkened cabin mid cruise is people come to the more open areas in front of the exits to stretch and exercise. If you have dark shoes/socks on they really can't see where your feet are and often you get trodden on.

The white socks are generally noticeable even in a dark cabin and people avoid them. (Even if such notice is subliminal.)

I still wouldn't choose an exit row with glowing neon socks on or white socks. Its also the noise - people standing around talking as well, and the crowds after meal times - you nearly need to have your feet up on the seat to avoid being trodden on! Row 1 or 2 of economy if you must fly Y. On feet trodders, few transient PAX going to/from toilets etc...

Depends what cabin your in, 747 upper J not many seats and exit rows have tons of room.

I find the prodigious use of my walking stick early in the flight seems to work with said toe stompers!! (grin)

I flew MEL-LAX on Wed last week and had 66a. I did not get trodden on or bumped, and the guy in the middle seat moved back to a row of 3 as it was so lightly loaded.
The seat seems far enough out of the way that people don't seem to get too close to your feet. It was a little draughty, but the blanket provided was more than adequate. I slept so well on the flight over that I have had no jetlag at all from this trip.
I'm in 66k coming home on Tuesday nite.
Just as an aside, when I booked the flight, it was paer of ADL-MEL-LAX-SFO return, and the QF system automatically put me in exit rows on EVERY sector, even with AA! I usually change my bookings to exit rows but in this case, I didn't have to do anything

I have used them about a year ago to LAX ( part of a ADL- YVR) and would have put down as some of the best money spent on the trip.. But yes i did get knocked about a bit.

I think it depends on how tall you are. I am 6'4 and will always choose exit row over bulkhead on long haul. I dont like bulkhead as I cant stretch my legs out.

But yes i did get knocked about a bit.

I found the same, sitting next to the galley. plus the constant light every time they flicked the curtains open. But for me, the sanity that comes with the extra leg room was well worth the disturbed sleep and occasional bump.
