Qantas Economy Plus Discussion

Data point for SYD-AKL B738 service: as a Plat row 4 seats (Economy Plus - Front) were blocked until T-80, whereupon they became selectable for AUD68.

All other seats from row 5 and back selectable for free from time of booking.

Around T-7-12 hours they seem to open up for free …

Another data point - Seat 24J on the 333 is listed as a forward seat and has opened up for me (as a gold) but when I select it, it wants me to pay $72 - a strange amount given that this is a SYD-HND flight and economy plus seats cost $163 and normal seat selection including forward seats should be free.

24J is a “Forward - Front,” seat and is therefore not included in the free selection for gold, or WP for that matter.

It's listed as 'forward' in their seat maps and seat selection, so if they have a different classification for it then it's not reflected during seat selection.
Whereas 23AB is listed as 'economy plus- front' and is available for selection at $190.

Yep my bad. Was looking at the old seat map when it was a forward front seat. Perhaps they haven’t updated it to reflect the new classification and the system still thinks you need to pay for it?

Flew VH-EBR QF72 yesterday row 27A and B. Very good leg room. Service was also fantastic. I am P1 so did not need to pay for the seats.
Yes!

I mentioned up thread I flew an a332 MEL-SYD a few months ago, in the usual crew rest seat at the back of the first economy cabin. Pitch is 34 inches for those seats and it really was very comfortable and made the world of difference.

Could easily do a SIN/HKG on those!

Flights this week on VH-XZT and -XZR going from BNE-ISA and return. No economy plus, Y starting at row 5 but only 3 rows of J, no wifi. Any reason why these planes have a different setup? Or QF treating regional customers differently without competition?

XZQ through XZT were acquired from Singapore Airlines last year. Qantas are basing these out of Brisbane, still in their previous configuration without access to Wifi and Entertainment.

My understanding is that they will eventually be standardised with the rest of the 737 fleet but not sure there is a timeframe in place for this.

As pointed out above they’re the ex SQ 737’s (XZQ-XZT) and still carry the same interior, layout and seating. Realistically they’ll probably not be changed until the 737 refresh program. Despite no Y+ they also have 6 less economy seats than the rest of QF’s 737’s. That being said they whilst they predominantly operate within QLD they also operate interstate usually down to SYD then a return to OOL and back to BNE but also do SYD-CNS and ADL-SYD occasionally plus others so it’s not just regional customers getting stuck on them. You can spot them when booking as there will be no wifi symbol and the entertainment symbol is grayed out. Also the J cabin has 102 cm of legroom as opposed to the regular 94 cm. Though if you’re shafted into one without notice that’s less useful.

Is there any possibility they may take the cabins out of some of the retiring B738s, such as VXP today to apply to the ex-SQ birds to allow for fleet standardisation and hence be able to send them network wide and bring Y+ to them?

Doubt it. Believe the SQ birds are going to be the first to get the full refit, which have seemingly been delayed like the 332s due to seat supply chain issues

Having aircraft with differing numbers of seats and Configs makes it a nightmare for the schedulers.
