Qantas Business Class meals & menus

woohoo the rice like pasta returns! :D

re water/water. yes it's stupid and the only differentiation seems to be breky flights (say before 9am) get water or juice, then the juice is replaced with sparkling water. Having said that I notice on many flights more pax than not opt for sparkling over still, so there must be a demand for it? (I can't stand the stuff myself). It's quite european though as sparkling is very common there too (in general, not on flights per se)

I did MEL-BNE-MEL over the last weekend and did not eat either way tbh but it seemed like the usual fare though the return flight did have 3 hot options it seemed (laska soup, a chicken and pasta - prob the same rice like pasta as above :) and something else I forget). Due to the unfortunate situation of a poor screaming baby ahead of me (the parents tried SO hard to keep the little one settled, but it just did not work out very well :( ) and some back in row 4 and 5 I opeted for NC headphones and a more stiff drink. The deadheading FA sitting next to me quitely said to me "I so wish I could have one of those too but I have to work!" :D

A slightly related shout out to the spice bar at MEL J dom lounge... I finally got to try it and theyhad like satay skewers with rice and veg and it was yummy. The vego option looked good too. The regular buffet actually had a few options too including a stir fry noodle, some lamb and roast potatoes which I thought was a really great variation of options. I did not try the lamb, but the potato was pretty good as were the noodles.

I'm in the BNE J lounge right now. When did they enhance away the booze?

I know I can get a drink in the VA lounge at this time of day.

QF 619 BNE-MEL right now (via QF inflight wifi)

Teriyaki beef or zucchini soup I think. When I mentioned I like bubbles, I was given a bottle of Grant Burge. Okay ,it's not the best, but at least there's bubbles.

Verdict: veg overcooked, but flavours all there. Wish I had some sake to go with it.

That's downright cheap. It used to be earlier in the J lounge, and internationally isn't it available at all times? (certainly is in the JAL Sakura lounges)

It’s been midday for a while, in fact I can remember it being ~1/2pm before they shifted it forward to noon.

Yes, QF's international lounges have (in my experience at least) alcohol available all day. Some restrictions may apply - eg in the AKL F lounge wine and beer are available from opening but spirits only from (maybe) 11am.

People bag AA (or other US carriers) for not being up to scratch with QFd... but at least if I want a bloody mary as a PDB I get one :) And a double at that.
And made with clamato juice and plenty of tabasco - pretty hard to say no to that PDB :D

note that I believe the 12pm thing has to do with (some) states rules regarding service of alcoohol permits specifying what times they are allowed to (this may now be historic as opposed to current).

International lounges technically not being "within" Austeralia or at least the state are not subject to that stuff.

That used to be the reasoning.

No photos, but on QF128 last Wednesday they served a nice little chicken salad (slices of chicken) but then stated they could not provide the beef stir fry. Apparently the higher status pax had gobbled it all up. I flew on CX & AY on the same trip and never had a problem obtaining the preferred option. They both generally have extra meals that the staff polish off quite openly once everyone else has been served. So for a main I took the Duck Wonton which was nicely flavoured but the wonton fell apart trying to manouvre it to my mouth.

I have flown on a few 717 services Brisbane-Melbourne and return recently.
My impression was that food and beverages were not the same standards as the 737-800s.
Maybe, I was flying at refreshment times vs meal times.
I certainly wasn't offered any grant burge sparking wine.
Are the offerings different as if so, I'll just avoid the slightly narrower bodies?

In my experience there is no difference. My suspicion is you've just encountered the 'QF: consistently inconsistent' factor.
If anything I've had better breakfast and dinner choices / meals on 717s on slightly longer routes (eg BNE-MEL or CNS-BNE).
As for the Grant Burge sparkling, if you are talking breakfast, it used to be proactively offered or on the trolley maybe 80% of the time about 3 years ago. Now I reckon it is less than 40%, irrespective of aircraft. Don't drink it myself but do try to note when it is proactively offered.
